    James Cook and the Arrival
    Captain James Cook roams the east coast of Australia in his ship. Cook claims it as a British possession and names eastern Australia "New South Wales".
  • Partly Established

    Partly Established
    After many wars and battles both mentally and physically, South Australia has been established and along with having a capital named Adelaide.
  • Hitting Gold

    Gold is found at several locations leading to gold rushes through the decade. The population increases by three times the population in 10 years, passing the million mark. A lot of Chinese are still coming in, which leads to the restrictions of them coming in. Aborigines are still treated very badly and their numbers sadly collapse at the same time.
  • So Secretive

    Australia was the first country to use the ¨Secret Ballot¨ technique for their elections, so nobody knew who voted for who.

    In 1901 the country is unified, in fact the commonwealth of Australia comes to be on January 1st. The Immigration Act puts a hold on non-white Immigration.
  • The First World War

    The outbreak of World War I terrified everyone at this time, therefore Australia sent hundreds of thousands of troops to Britain for help. They went alongside New Zealanders fighting their way through the war.

    In 1929 the Great Depression reaches Australia, and it hits hard. In fact, The recovery of the Depression was uneven, as a result, Australia follows Britain's lead into war fighting Nazi Germany.
  • Parting Away

    Australia started planning a plan to part away from Europe. Over the next 30 years, Australia gained about 2 million people, and one-third of those people were from Britain.
  • Equality for All?

    National vote on changes to constitution is passed. Section which includes Aboriginal people from official census is removed. Another law passed allows federal government to pass laws on Aboriginal issues.
  • Independence

    The Australia Act makes Australian law fully independent of the British parliament and legal system. There is no longer any arrangement for Australian courts to mount final decisions to the ¨Privy Council¨ in London.
