First Europeans
First Europeans to sail to Australia were the Dutch (Netherlands) in 1606, but they didn't settle there.
THe Dutch made one landing, were attacked by the Aborigines, and then abondoned further exploration. -
Captain James Cook
Captain James Cook sailed around Australia. He named the area New South Wales, ignored the Aborigines living there, and claimed the land England. -

Sailors mapped the eastern Australia. -
First Fleets
British ships called "First Fleets" left England with convicts to establish a prison colony. -
Prisoners
Bristish prisoners settled in Australia. -
New South Wales
New South Wales was officially a penal (prison) colony consisting mainly of convicts, marines (guards), and the marines' families.
Only 20% of the first convicts were women. -
Reserves
1830's: Remants of the tribes in the settled areas were moved onto Reserves. They were forbidden from teaching their children their language and customs. -
Port Arthur
From 1833, until the 1850's, it was the destination for hardest of convicted British and Irish criminals, those who were secondary offenders having re- offended after their arrival in Australia. In addition, Port Arthur had some of the strickest security measures of the British peal system. Some tales suggest that prisoners committed murder (an offense punishable by death) just to escape the desolation of camp. -
Great Britain Takes Land
Great Britain saw that Australia was a good location to love its navy in the Siuth Pacific Ocean. Its location would make it possible for British ships to make repairs & got supplies. Australia had opportunities for trade with Aisa and the Americas. Nonprisoner colognization continued. Major coastal settlements became 7 independent colonies. -
Boundaries Created
Governement officials created boundaries for the colonies that are still in place territory. -
New South Wales
British transported prisoners to Australia until 1868. By this time, many free immigrants were settling here. They built businesses, trading posts, farms, etc. -
Sepration
During the 1900's, seperation was an official government policy which lasted for many decades. -
Commonwealth
The Commonwealth of Australia was establish. -
Immigration Restriction Act
Immigration Restriction Act of 1901: Restricted, migration to people of European descent. This was dismantled after the Second World War. -
Canberra
Melbourne served as the national capital until Canberra was completed on 1927. -
Aborigines' Help
1967: Federal government began to pass legislation to try to help Aborigines. It was widely seen as affirmation of the Australian people's wish to see its government take direct action to improve the living conditions of Aborigines. -
Aboriginal Farmers
in March of 1967, striking Aborigianl farmers changed politicial history by extending a demand or equal wages to a declaration of their rights of ownership of traditional lands. This became one of Australia's first successful land claims by its indigenous people. -
Australia Act
1986: Australia Act-- all legal ties wiht the British Empire were served. Today, Australia is a parliamentary democracy (constitutional monarchy) with Elizabeth II as queen. -

Still Today...
Today, many aboriginal people do not know their origins: which tribe they are descended from or the names of their parents and or grandparents. They are a lost generation.
