The Universal Declaration of Human Rights
The United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as a bulwark against oppression and discrimination. -
The Korean War
The young Cold War suddenly turned hot, bloody and immoderate. Within a few days, North Korea's invasion of South Korea brought about a United Nations "police action" against the aggressors. That immediately produced heavy military and naval involvement by the United States. -
CEDAW
Australia signed The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) at a special signing ceremony at the UN World Conference for the Decade of Women -
CROC
20 countries had lodged their formal document of approval with the UN Secretary-General and Australia was one of the first countries to sign and become a party to Convention on the Rights of the Child "CROC" after it came into force. -
Australian Peacekeeping
Australian peacekeepers moved into East Timor, as part of a multinational force sponsored by the United Nations, to assist East Timor's transition to independence from Indonesia. It has been the largest Australian commitment to a peacekeeping operation to date.
