    1862-1863 - Sphygmograph Modification

Mach somehow became involved in assessing the accuracy of Jules-Étienne Marey's sphygmograph (an instrument to record the movements of the pulse by tracing). In doing so, Mach published 6 articles on the subject and revised the instrument to be smaller, more accurate and cost saving. By Marey making Mach's revisions in his second version of the sphygmograph, it survived through time (Métraux, 2016).

    1865 - Mach's Bands
Mach Bands are an optical illusion that we perceive when looking at significant contrasting elements. For example, if we are looking at a picture divided into thirds with the outside colors being black and the inside color being a light purple, you will see thin dark band along the outer edge and thin light bands along the inner edge. Mach developed the idea of our senses pre-processed information prior to sending it to our brain (Pojman, 2020).

1886 - Contributions to the Analysis of the Sensations
Ernst Mach's publication of the Analysis of Sensations (as called for short) was his studies and theories on the biological and sensory relationship to science and physics. This also evolved into psychological perceptions as well. His book dives into the relationships between physics, physical sciences to psychological phenomena of perception and the senses (Mach, 1890).
  • 1887 - The Mach Number

    1887 - The Mach Number
The Mach number is derived by Ernst Mach's calculations of spark or ballistic shock waves. He came to discover that if an object moves faster than the speed of sound, it can break that barrier creating a wave effect. But, that is all dependent upon different variables, so the Mach number is not a constant number but an equation for such (Tietz, 2018).
