Audrey Kathleen van Heemstra Ruston is born in Brussels, Belgium to a Dutch mother and a British father by the names of Ella van Heemstra and Joseph Hepburn-Ruston. -
24th January 1935
Audrey’s dad leaves the family. -
September 1 1939
World War 2 breaks out and Ella sends Audrey and her two stepbrothers to Holland. -
May 14 1940
German troops march through Arnhem where Audrey is and they take all the resources. They also take all the van Heemstra’s things and properties. -
September 17th 1944
The ‘Battle of Arnhem’ begins and after several days of fighting the victorious Germans, Audrey and other people are told to leave within 24 hours. -
May 4th 1945
Holland is free from the enemies liberation, Audrey is suffering from asthma, jaundice and other diseases. She weighed 40.8 kg and her two stepbrothers emerge from hiding. Audrey then starts dance with Sonia Gaskell.
