Audience Research - Task 4

  • The Cassette

    The Cassette
The Cassette is a magnetic tape recording format for audio recording and playback. Compact cassettes come in two forms, either already containing content as a pre-recorded cassette, or as fully recordable "blank" cassette. At the time, for audiences this was a great change that people loved, due to the fact there was an opportunity to easily listen to your own music without having to listen to the radio.

    Changes in Music Consumption

  • Sony Walkman

    Sony Walkman
The metal-cased blue-and-silver Walkman TPS-L2, the world's first low-cost portable stereo, launched in the UK in 1980, it came with stereo playback and two mini headphone jacks, permitting two people to listen at the same time. This was a great step forward in terms of the output of listening to music, as the future reveals great improvements based on the Walkman. For audiences, this was much better than cassettes as people could listen to their own songs much more practically.
  • Sony CDP-101

    Sony CDP-101
The Sony CDP-101 was the world's first commercially released compact disc player. The system was launched in Japan on October 1, 1982 at a list price of 168,000 yen (approx $730).
This was an insight towards the ideology of how technology first started for people to access CDs. The only problem with this was the price was exceptional, which only certain people could afford.
  • Sony Discman D121

    Sony Discman D121
This was obviously a great success, as people could now listen to CDs on the go without having to listen to CDs in a music player plugged in somewhere. Ideally, the size was not the most ideal, but it was a major change to being able to freely listen to music whenever you want. This was a very practical idea which has now evolved into many different devices which I shall go onto mention next.
  • iPod

    iPod
The 5GB hard drive was the key element that persuaded people towards the iPod, as this managed you to hold a lot more songs than most MP3 players which only held 512mb. This made Steve Jobs's claim of '1000 songs in your pocket' seem like the best creation to date, which is why the iPod has now grown rapidly in relation to the capabilities it now holds with the current generations.
  • YouTube

    YouTube
YouTube is a video-sharing website headquartered in San Bruno, California. The service was created by three former PayPal employees in February 2005 and has been owned by Google since late 2006. The site allows users to upload, view, and share videos. This website is extremely key towards audience research, as it has become immensely popular to watch music videos on for free. Some of the most popular music videos have over 1 billion YouTube views, which shows the number of users who use the web.
  • iPod Touch

    iPod Touch
The first generation iPod Touch was launched on September 5, 2007. First iPod with Wi-Fi and a multi-touch interface. Features Safari web browser and wireless access to the iTunes Store and YouTube. Later added 16 and 32 GB versions, 32 GB in February 2008. The iPod Touch was a massive leap forward in terms of technology, as this saw the end for most MP3 players, which many claim the new word for MP3 is now iPod. As of 2013, it had sold 100 million copies which underlines its popularity.
  • Spotify

    Spotify
Spotify is a commercial music streaming service which music can be browsed or searched by artist, album, genre, playlist, or record label. Paid "Premium" subscriptions remove advertisements and allow users to download music to listen offline. On computers, a link allows users to purchase selected material via partner. The rise of users again underlines how audiences are now using these types of services where streaming and downloading has become very simple to use.
  • Modern Day Technology

    Modern Day Technology
The proliferation of hardware has become far more apparent in the last decade than ever before, through the advances in technology that companies are coming up with. We have seen 6 generations of iPods and iPhones, the introduction of iPads, general mobile phones becoming far more advanced through popularity. Looking back to the past, there is a muvh bigger trend to have these products, which inevitably leads to more music browising.
