John Dalton's Atoms
John Dalton devised a theory that matter is made up of atoms that are different weights and arranged together in ratios based on weight. He also developed that the atoms are spherical in shape and are in constant motion. -
JJ Thomson's Electrons
Using properties discovered from cathode rays, JJ Thomson discovered the electron. -
Electron Charge Determined
Robert Millikan determined the charge of a single electron. This is now a fundamental constant known as the elementary charge. -
Ernest Rutherford's Atom
Known as the father of nuclear physics, Ernest Rutherford developed the early structure of the atom. Using gold foil and the scattering of alpha particles, he determined and proved the existence of an atomic nucleus. -
Neils Bohr's Atom
Neils Bohr developed his own atomic model. His model included electrons travelling around the nucleus in orbits. He said that chemical properties were determined by the number of electrons found in the outer orbits. Bohr used Planck's quantum theory to show that electrons emit energy when they change orbits.
