Atomic Structure Timeline

  • Democritus

In 460 BC, Democritus thought that matter was made of ever smaller pieces that ended at some point. Democritus called these particles atoms.
  • John Dalton

John Dalton created the atomic theory.
  • JJ Thomson

Thomson discovered the electron in 1897 and created the "plum pudding" model in 1904.
  • Albert Einstein

Albert Einstein was the first to actually prove the existence of atoms.
  • Robert Millikan

Robert Millikan measured the charge of a single electron using an oil drop experiment.
  • Ernest Rutherford

Along with Hans Geiger and Ernest Marsden, Rutherford caused alpha particles to pass through a sheet of gold foil. Some of the particles were measured to be deflected and this led Rutherford to formulate the Rutherford model.
  • Niels Bohr

Niels Bohr proposed that an atom is a small particle with a positively charged nucleus that is orbitted by electrons.
  • Louis de Broglie

Louis de Broglie set the base for wave mechanics.
  • Wolfgang Pauli

Wolfgang Pauli contributed the Pauli exclusion principle to quantom mechanics.
  • Werner Heisenberg

Werner Heisenberg was a key creator of quantom mechanics. In 1927 he published his uncertainty principle.
  • Erwin Schrodinger

Schrodinger contributed the Schrodinger equation to quantom mechanics.
  • James Chadwick

James discovered the atomic number and neutron. He also helped discover the nuclear bomb.
