Democritus
Democritus' experiment was that you cut a piece of gold in half and half again an get to an atom. his inference was you would get to a point where you couldn't cut it anymore, it was a thought experiment. -
John Dalton
Dalton's atomic theory proposed that all matter was composed of atoms, indivisible and indestructible building blocks. While all atoms of an element were identical, different elements had atoms of differing size and mass. -
Sir J.J. Thomson
J.J. Thomson discovered the electron by experimenting with a Crookes, or cathode ray, tube. He demonstrated that cathode rays were negatively charged. In addition, he also studied positively charged particles in neon gas. -
Lord Rutherford
Rutherford overturned Thomson's model in 1911 with his well-known gold foil experiment in which he demonstrated that the atom has a tiny and heavy nucleus. Rutherford designed an experiment to use the alpha particles emitted by a radioactive element as probes to the unseen world of atomic structure. -
Niels Bohr
Niels Bohr proposed a theory for the hydrogen atom based on quantum theory that energy is transferred only in certain well defined quantities. Electrons should move around the nucleus but only in prescribed orbits. When jumping from one orbit to another with lower energy, a light quantum is emitted. -
Sir James Chadwick
James Chadwick bombarded beryllium atoms with alpha particles. An unknown radiation was produced. Chadwick interpreted this radiation as being composed of particles with a neutral electrical charge and the approximate mass of a proton. This particle became known as the neutron. -
Current Model
Schrodinger and Heisenberg Model. There is a key point about the Bohr model that is no longer accepted in current models of the atom. In the Bohr model, the electrons are still thought to orbit the nucleus just like planets orbit the sun.
