Robert Boyle
He measured the relationships between gasses and volume. -
Antoine Lavoisier
This man created the idea for having a single common lanaguage when it came to science and elements. -
John Daltons Atomic Theory.
John Dalton pictures atoms as tiny, indestructible particles, with no internal structure.
All matter is composed of atoms.
All atoms of the same element are identical.
Different elements have different types of elements.
Chemical reactions occur when elements are rearranged.
Compounds are formed from atoms of the constituent elements. -
J.J, Thomson Atomis Model
A british sciencetist, discovers the electron. That later leads to his "Plum-Pudding" model. He pictures electrons embedded in a sphere of a postivtive elcetrical charge.
The atom was made up of small particles.
He proved his theory by using a Cathode Ray Tube. -
Hantaro Nagaoka Atomic Model
A japanese physicist, suggests that an atom has a central nuclues. Electrons move in orbits like the rings around saturn. He developed an early but incorrect planetary model of the atom. He based his model on the rings around saturn. However his model was not created properly. He explained that the rings are held there due to it's massive orbit. altough this model was wrong it still lead to the discovery of the atoms rings. -
Ernest Rutherford
New Zealand's Physicist finds that an atom has a small postive charge nuclues. Electrons move around nuclues.
In his gold foil experiment he shot a postivie charged beam of particles through a sheet of gold foil. He thought if the particles were as soft as J.J. Thomson's plum pudding model had suggested than they would pass through and continue in a straight line, which most did. However some did not this showed that the plum pudding model was somewhat false, so he created a new model. -
Niels Bohr
showed that the electrons move in a circular orbit at fixed distances from the nuclues. He also tried to explain the elements better by using other expermients by such people as Rutherford to futher explain the atom. -
Louis De Brogile
Proposes that moving particles like electrons have some properties of waves. Within a few years, experimental evidence supports the idea. -
Erwin Schrodinger
Develpos a mathematical equations to decribe the motion of electrons in atoms. His work leads to the lectron cloud model. -
James Chadwick
An english physicist, confirms the exsistence of nuetrons. which have no charge. Atomic nuclei contain nuetrons and positively charged protons. -
Quantum Mechanical Model
The current day model of an atom is based upon the Quatum Mechanical method. Each electron is thought of as a cloud, of negative charge, instead of one tiny negative particle. It is believed that in this model electrons occupy all of the space in an atom in different levels or rings. An atoms consists fo enery levels, protons, neutrons, and electrons.
