Atomic Model

  • 400 BCE

    Democritus

He was born 370 BCE and died 460 BCE. He discovered the idea of the atom in year 400 BCE. Democritus thought that atoms are tiny, uncuttable, solid particles that are surrounded by empty space and constantly moving at random.

  • John Dalton

    John Dalton
John was born on september 5th, 1766 and died 1844, July 27. He defined an atom to be a ball-like structure in 1803, as the concepts of atomic nucleus and electrons were unknown at the time.
  • Michael Faraday

Michael Faraday was born on september 22, 1971
and died august 25th,1867. He discovered that atoms have an electrical component in 1839 which changed the way that everyone viewed an atom.
  • Eugen Goldstein

Goldstein was born on September 5th, 1850 and died December 25th, 1930. He concluded in 1886 that in addition to the electrons, or cathode rays, that travel from the negatively charged cathode toward the positively charged anode, there is another ray that travels in the opposite direction, from the anode toward the cathode.
  • Ernest Rutherford

    Ernest Rutherford
Ernest was born on August 30th, 1871 and died on October 19th, 1937. He discovered that atoms have a small, positively charged, nucleus in the center of an atom. The electrons move around the nucleus.

    Athens Olympic games in 1896
  • JJ Thomson

    JJ Thomson
JJ Thompson was born December 18th,1856 and died August 30, 1940. He discovered that electrons were positively charged on April 30th, 1897 which led to a model for the structure of the atom. His work also brought him to the invention of the mass spectrograph.
  • Robert Millikan

Robert was born March 22nd, 1868 and died December 19th, 1953. He made us discover in 1910 the charge of an electron experiment. He uncovered this by his oil drop experiment which was when the oil drops picked up static charge and were suspended between two charged plates.
  • Neils Bohr

    Neils Bohr
Neils Bohr was born Octobee 1885 and died November 6th, 1913. He discovered that the electrons orbit the nucleus at a defined distance.

  • Edwin Schroedinger

    Edwin Schroedinger
Edwin was born August 12th, 1887 and died January 4th, 1961. He discovered that electrons are in regions around the nucleus and not on tracks in 1926.
  • World Event within 10 years of Schroedinger’s discovery

The U.S. stock market crash in 1925.
  • Werner Heisenberg

Werner Heisenberg was born on December 5th, 1901 and died February 1st, 1976. He contributed to atomic theory through formulating quantum mechanics in terms of matrices and in discovering the uncertainty principle.
  • James Chadwick

    James Chadwick
James Chadwick was born on October 20th, 1891 nd died July 24th, 1974. He discovered that there was neutrons in the nucleus in 1932 because the mass was heavier than he thought.
