    USA vs Japan

    The US and Britain had colonies and territory in the regions Japan was invading. This and Japan's association with the Axis powers justified the wests' attacks on South-East Asia. Subsequent to Germany declaring war on the US and Japan's attack on Pearl Harbour, the US declared war on Japan.
    The US also imposed sanctions upon Japan, which applied stress and provided justification for expansion: resources.

    Battle of Midway

    Japan's offensive in the Pacific was overturned and the US began offensive action instead, regaining territory and confining Japan. Allied forces slowly gained naval and air supremacy in the Pacific, and moved methodically from island to island, conquering them and often sustaining significant casualties. The Japanese, however, successfully defended their positions on the Chinese mainland until 1945.

    D-Day
    Launched in June with the simultaneous landing of U.S., British, and Canadian forces on five separate beachheads in Normandy, France. By the end of August 1944 all of northern France was liberated, and the invading forces reorganized for the drive into Germany, where they would eventually meet with Soviet forces advancing from the east to bring an end to the Nazi Reich.
