Atom timeline

  • John Dalton

John Dalton created his model of the atom in 1808. He discovered the atom by experimenting with gases. This led to his conclusion that the total pressure of a mixture of gases amounted to the sum of the partial pressures that each individual gas exerted while occupying the same space.
  • J.J. Thomson

J.J. Thomson created hid model of the atom in 1904 after discovered that the atom has electrons. J.J. Thomson's experiments with cathode ray tubes showed that all atoms contain tiny negatively charged subatomic particles or electrons. This made him come up with the conclusion that every atom has tiny negative charged subatomic particles.
  • Ernest Rutherford

Ernest Rutherford created his model of the atom in 1911.After he discovered that atoms have a nucleus. He did an experiment with gold foil that showed him the beam went into different directions. A beam of alpha particles was aimed at a piece of gold foil. Most alpha particles passed through the foil, but a few were scattered backward. This made him come up with the conclusion that the atom is made up of mostly empty space surrounding the nucleus.
  • Niels Bohr

Niels Bohr created his model of the atom in 1913. After he discovered His experiment was based on quantum theory that some physical quantities only take discrete values. This made him come up with the conclusion that Electrons move around a nucleus, but only in prescribed orbits, and If electrons jump to a lower-energy orbit, the difference is sent out as radiation.
