Democritus
Said matter is made of tiny solid particles.
Named the particles atomos, which means "uncuttable".
lived in Abdera, Thrace.
Used observations to find the new info (Big Thoughts)
Lived from 460-370 B.C.
Interesting Fact: Democritus was one of the few people to believe that everything was not made up of earth, air, fire, and water.
(B.C.) -
John Dalton
Said atoms were hard, dense, spheres that were indestructible.
Believed atoms of one element were exactly alike and atoms of another element are different.
Said atoms come together to form new substances.
Did expiriments observing chemical reactions.
Lived in Eaglesfield
Lived from September 6 1766 – July 27 1844
Interesting Fact: John's family was actually a Quaker family -
J.J. Thomson
Discovered that atmos contained negatively charged particles called electrons.
In tomson's model the electrons were scattered through a ball made of positive charges.
Lived in Cheetham Hill, England
Lived From December 18 1856 – August 30 1940)
Expiriment was studying electrical discharge in a vacuum
Interesting Fact: His mother came from a local textile family. His father ran an antiquarian bookshop. -
Earnest Rutheford
Suggested atoms is mostly empty space, with electrons moving around a dense, positively charged center.
Called center of atom the nucleus.
Also found nucleus contained positively charged particles he called protons.
Lived in Brightwater, New Zealand.
Lived From August 30 1871 – October 19 1937
Expiriment was shooting a stream of positively charged particles into a sheet of gold foil and determining where they land -
Niels Bohr
Used Rutheford's data to show that electrons move around a nucleus in energy levels according to how much energy they have (more energy = farther out).
Said electrons were like planets orbiting the sun.
Also thought the "orbit" was a perfect circle.
Lived in Copenhagen, Denmark
Lived From October 7 1885 – November 18 1962
His expiriment showed that energy levels or orbitals are
quantized and was mostly just math.
interesting Fact:He was the second oldest of three children in his family -
Modern (Erwin Schrodinger and Werner Heisenberg)
Found electrons were found in a hazy region around the nucleus called the electron cloud.
States that the atom consists of a small, positively charged nucleus, containing protons and neutrons, and is surrounded by a cloudlike region of negatively charged electrons.
Expiriments consisited of mostly math and observations. -
Modern cont.
Erwin Schrodinger:
Lived in Vienna, Austria
Lived From August 12 1887 – January 4 1961
Interesting Fact: Was a Austrian physicist who also worked a lot in quantum physics
Werner Heisenberg:
Lived in Würzburg, Germany
Lived From December 5 1901 – February 1 1976
Interesting Fact: was a German theoretical physicist and was Nobel Prize in Physics in 1932 for creating quantum mechanics -
