Democritus
He theorized that everything is made up of atoms. They can't be destroyed and is always moving. -
Isaac Newton
Isaac brought up the idea that a mechanical universe consists of small masses in motion... -
John Dalton
John has been credited with the discovery of the atomic weight of atoms. He is also known for stating that an element is consisted of similar atoms and compounds are atoms from different elements compounded together to make a new substance. -
Dmitri Mendeleev
Dmitri is basically the father of the modern periodic table. -
J.J. Thomson
During the time, many were theorizing that all atoms were made up from a fundamental element, such as hydrogen. He discovered that atoms were built up of many smaller particles known as electrons today. -
Marie Curie
Marie is the person that observed that atoms do decay, thus you have radiation. This meant that atoms could possibly be split. She also is credited for discovering the elements radium and polonium. -
Hans Geiger
Hans worked with Ernest on the famous gold foil experiment and the geiger-counter resulted from their exploration. -
R.A .Millikan
Credited on his work to calculate the electron charge of an atom. -
Ernest Rutherford
Ernest theorized that neutrons were in the nucleus of the atom, making the mass of atoms twice that what people thought of initially thought. He's also the first person to purposly change an element into another. -
H.G. Moseley
Henry is credited for how the elements are ordered on the periodic table. The way it's arranged is how many positive charges (protons) are in the nuclii of an atom and are arranged from least to greatest. -
Niels Bohr
Niels theorized that the electrons travelled in a distinct orbit around the nucleus of the atom. He's also made many of diagrams of what an atom might look like. -
Heisenberg
Known for his work and discovery of the matrix mechanics. -
James Chadwick
James is credited as the person that discovered the neutron. This discovery led to the ability of making heavier metals than uranium and also led to the idea that any atom could be split... which led to the atomic bomb in 1945. -
Lise Meitner
Lise is known as the founder of nuclear fission, along with her research partner Hans. Her expirement consisted of bombarding a uranium atom with neutrons and noticed traces of barium. They then hypothesized that with the right amount of neutrons and alot of energy that the uranium atom could split into barium and krypton. On another note, she was the second woman in history to get her doctorate in physics.
