Birth
Atahualpa was born in Quito, Ecuador. His parents were Huayna Capac and Paccha Duchicela. Huayna Capac was the Inca ruler at that time. -

Huayna Capac Death
Huayna Capac, Atahualpa's father, died from a plague. The plague was most likely smallpox which was brought to the New World by Spanish conquistadors. Since Huayna was the Inca ruler, either Atahualpa or his brother Huascar had to be the Inca empire. -

Inca Civil War
Atahualpa and Huascar fought to see who would be the new Inca empire. They did this because the Inca ruler, Huayna Capac, died. This war was also known as the War of the Two Brothers. -

Inca Civil War ends
Starting on May 17 1529, the Inca Civil War finally ends. Atahualpa won against his brother Huascar. Atahualpa became the new Inca Empire. -

Ransom Room
Atahualpa had a room called "Ransom Room" where he kept all of his gold and silver. The Incas made statues with that gold and silver. When the Spaniards came, they made the Indians melt down all of the statues into gold and silver ingots. -

Francisco Pizarro met Atahualpa in the most fateful place in the New World. They met in Vilcabamba which is also known as Machu Picchu. The Spaniards invited the Inca chief to attend a feast. -

The Spanish killed thousands of Atahualpas people. They killed his councellors, commanders and unarmed attendants. Francisco Pizarro was the leader of the Spanish. -

Atahualpa was the last Sapa Inca. He was the last Sapa Inca in the Inca Empire of Tawantinsuyu. His empire fell after it was conquered by the Spanish. -

Atahualpa was executed by Francisco Pizarro. He died from a garrote which is a metal bar or wire used to strangle someone. He was buried in Cajamarca.
