1502: Atahualpa was born to Inca ruler, Huayna Capac and an Ecuadorian princess, Paccha Duchicela. He was the youngest of 7 children. Atahualpa had 6 brothers and 1 sister. -

Fight between Brothers
In 1527, Huayna, Atahualpa’s dad, died of smallpox! After that, the kingdom was divided between Atahualpa, only age 25, and the oldest son, Huascar. They would then go into a bloody civil war. -

The Fight Ends!
In 1532, Atahualpa wins the Inca Civil War. Since Huascar lost, he wasn’t the legitimate heir. Meaning, Atahualpa was now the new Incan Ruler! -

A New Ruler
Later in the year of 1532, Atahualpa officially becomes the ruler of the Inca Empire! He would be the last Inca ruler, as well as the richest! He had a room filled with gold and silver called the Ransom room! Historians believe that this room was also used for Atahualpa’s execution. -

Also, in 1532, Atahualpa marries his sister, Coya Asarpay. In the Inca Empire it wasn’t rare that your would marry your brother or sister! The reason why is because the Incas wanted to keep the royal bloodline pure! -

On November 16, 1532, The Battle of Cajamarca breaks out! Atahualpa then meets Francisco Pizarro, the conquistador, seeking new land! The battle then gave Francisco a chance to make a plan to capture Atahualpa! -

Atahualpa's Capture
1533: During the war, Pizarro has Atahualpa over for a feast in today’s Machu Picchu! Pizarro sends signals to his men to attack the other Incas! In less than an hour, 5, 000 Incas are killed, not able to save Atahualpa from his capture! -

1533: Before Atahualpa’s death, there were different opinions on how he was supposed to be killed! He was either supposed to be burned to a stake or be strangulated! In the end, Pizarro decided he would die by strangulation! -

On Jul 26, 1533, Atahualpa dies from being strangulated by a garrote. A garrote is an iron collar or wire! Atahualpa was then buried August 29, 1533! -

Pizarro Takes Over
In November of 1533, Pizarro takes over the empire and Atahualpa was the last true bloodline of the Incas! With Pizarro’s victory of taking over the empire, the Incas had to learn Christianity! The Inca empire was ended after 300 years!
