    Japan Closes their countries to outsiders

    Japan did not trade with anyone else you were dutch. They started to adopt dutch culture. The "borrowed" things from China like the alphabet and government. Only had one port for trade.

    This mission was the first British mission to China. This was an attempt to expand trade with China. It brought clocks, globes, and musical instruments. All things China had some form of already though.

    British trades opium

    The British got China hooked on opium. Opium is a pain killer drug. When taking too much of it though, it becomes addictive. China needed it from British and it became a problem. Over 12 million Chinese men were addicted.

    Opium Wars

    Started by China trying to stop the British from selling and trading Opium. They realized how many people it was killing. British tries to intimidate China with their gunships. China does not stand a chance against the powerful warships.

    Taiping Rebellion

    Peasants were unhappy with how China was looking. They were upset with their land being controlled by foreigners. They were upset with what the future of China was looking like. 20-30 million people died in the battles. This is like the sepoy rebellion. This was most likely caused from the opium wars and addiction
  • Japan Reopens their country to outsiders

    America forced Japan to open themselves. This was led by Matthew Perry. Even though Japan had opened themselves, they only opened to the Dutch, United States, Russia, and Britain. This was a significance because Japan had contact to the rest of the world now.
  • Boxer Rebellion

    A secret society within China that went against the foreigners. Western powers put down this rebellion. This was an attempt to get rid of the foreign power. This showed the grit that the China had in the beginning.
  • China declares itself the new Chinese Republic

    Sun Yixian is the first Chinese president and tries to "save" China. He sets out for 3 goals for China. Those goals include nationalism, democracy, and livelihood. This is when China starts to pick its self back up. This also could have impacted Chinas restoration as well.
  • The Meiji Restoration

    With the help of the British two small areas of Japan were able to come together and overthrow the current Shogun and restore Emperor Meiji to the throne. Takes Korea from China. Japan has their sights set on a small part of China and many islands south of Japan
