David was famous in Greek history and was cast in marble by Michelangelo over a century earlier. Gianlorenzo Bernini saw David in himself and so used his own physical features to create his version of David in 1623. -

Pablo Picasso's Mandolin and Clarinet was similar in style to his paintings but was actually a revolutionary new form of sculpture making. Instead of carving out of one material to create his sculptor Pablo Picasso was the first to create a type of sculpture that would later be known as constructed sculpture. Constructed sculpture is a process in which the artist uses found materials such as cardboard, wood, wire, celluloid, sheet metal, and translucent plastic to name a few. -

Frida Kahol was a Mexican painter who often painted herself as a way to show her sufferings. She saw her life as a tragic example of human suffering. In this painting she is showing the pain that her marriage to Diego causes her. She thinks of that marriage as one of the biggest mistakes in her life. -

Howardena Pindell used a process called mixed media to create her self portrait Autobiography: Water / Ancestors, Middle Passage / Family Ghosts. The base of this piece is acrylic paint but by using other materials such as paper, polymer, tempera, photo transfer, cattle markers, oil stick, and vinyl tape on her canvas she created the illusion that she was floating in a pool of water surrounded by objects and images that represented her and her heritage.
