The thirteenth amendment abloished slaveory thoughtout the united states. No form of slaveory can ever be brought back. Unless its a punishment for crime. -
Freedmens Bureau
This was made by Abe Lincoln and the congress. It was an event that the African americans move on from the civil war. -
Abe Lincolns Death
While attending a special performance of the comdey "Our American Cousin" presdient Abe was shot. He shattered a bone in his leg. -
Andrew Johnston became the president
Johnston became president right after Abe died. But he had already been vice president. He rebuilt the America from the war though the reconstuction. -
The Southern States Elect new Representatives
All of the Southern states created new governments based on the president Johnstons reconstuction plan. The south had to elect new representatives to congress. But the congress didn't want to seat these representatives. The republicans weren't going to let the south off easy. -
Civil Right Act of 1866
African americans became citizens because it cancled the dred scott case. It gave full citizenship to african americans. Also the law over turned the black codes. -
The Fourthteenth Amendment Passed
The fourthteenth amendment granted full citizenship to everyone who was born in the United States. Citizens had equal protection of the laws. Also the amendment said that no state could take away property, citizens lives, and liberty. -
Fifteenth Amendment Passed
The fifteenth amendment prohibited the federal governments from denying the right to vote to any male citizen. Just because of their color. Most republicans thought that this law would enable africans americans to protect themselves. -
Ulysses S Grant
During the civil war Grant was a hero. He was nominated by the republicans. Even though he was a republican and was on their side he didn't have a strong leadership for the reconstuction. -
Congress passing new laws
The congress were passing new laws about horriable acts of the Klu Klux Klan. The laws were a little sucess but only in the south because no one would testify what the Klu Klux Klan had done. But there was alot of failure to this law as well. -
Poll Tax
During the reconstuction period people had to pay to be able to vote. People put poll taxes on voting because people didn't want slaves to vote. Anyways slaves didn't have money so they couldn't vote anyways. -
The compromise of 1877
The democrats disputed the secision for the election. But the congress said that Hayes was the winner of the disputed election. The republicans agreed to withdraw all the northern troops from southern states. -
Jim Crow Laws
The public schools only allowed white kids to join them. While the african americans had their schools. The laws requiered african americans and whites to be seperated in almost everywhere. -
Plessy vs. Ferguson
The supreme court had decided to uphold segregation in the decison that they were going to make about the Plessy vs. Ferguson case. Then the court decided to rule segregationand made it legal if the african americans had acess to public places equal to those of whites. -
Grandfather Clause
The Grandfather clause was made to prevent african americans from voting. It was also made for when white people failed the literacy test. This couldn't work on african americans because they weren't allowed to vote.
