A day after Israel declared its independence Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, Transjordan, and Iraq invaded Israel. In the end the Arab armies were defeated. As a result of the war the Arab state never came to existence. The war also caused massive refugee problems. -

Six-Day War
After Egypt began to close off the Gulf of Aqaba Israel launched air strikes against Egypt, Syria, and Jordan. Then Israeli round troops moved in and rapidly defeated Arab forces. Israel took control of Golan Heights, Sinai Peninsula, Gaza Strip, West Bank, and East Jerusalem. -
Yom KIppur War
Egypt and Syria were determined to win their territory back so they made a surprise attack on Israel in 1973. At first Arab troops made gains in the war because Israel was not prepared for the attack. With U.S. support, Israel forces pushed back the Egyptian and Syrian armies. After weeks of fighting, both sides agreed to a cease-fire.
During the war Arab members of OPEC declared an oil embargo this made the price of oil around the would to rise dramatically. -
Camp David Accords
In 1977 the Egyptian president made a momentous declaration that Egypt wanted peace with Israel. U.S. president Jimmy Carter invited Sadat and Begin to Camp David to make this possible. There Egypt recognized Israel and Israel returned the Sinai Peninsula to Egypt. -
Second Intifada
The second Intifada began in 2000 this time the Palestinian youth were joined by Palestinian security forces with guns. After suicide bombers attacked civilian in Israel, the Israelis countered by sending troops backed by tanks, fighter jets, and helicopter gunships. Then Israel withdrew from Gaza and parts of the West Bank and turned Gaza over to the Palestinians.
