Tea Act
A tax on tea that was collected by the British and protested heavily by the colonists, most notably in the Boston Tea Party -

Colonists got fed up with the tea tax so they through all the tea from ships into the harbor. -

The Continental Congress met to write the Declaration of Independence -
Articles of Confederation
The Second Continental Congress got together to write the first form of law for the new country. The Articles were weak and ineffective though. -
Shay's Rebellion
There was a rebellion of poor farmers. This exposed the Articles for being weak and not work. -
Northwest Ordinance
This was mainly a way to get new states but it also gave rights to people of the northwest such as freedom of religion and speech etc. -
Constitution
The Articles were weak and ineffective so the founding fathers got together in secret and wrote the new Constitution. -
Bill of Rights
The Anti-Federalists were not all the way happy with the new Constitution. So a Bill of Rights was added so they could have rights that are protected. -

The new US was right in between a conflict between Britain and France. George Washington decided they are going to stay out of all other countries affairs. -

The US went to war with Great Britain over Britain trying to impress US ships and such. War did no end well for the US with the capital being burned. -
Hartford Convention
The Hartford Convention was a secret meeting of Federalists who were not happy with the War of 1812 and the Souths control over the government. -
Seminole Wars
Jackson invaded Florida to attack the Seminole. He did this because white frontiersmen who wanted their land accused the Seminole of attacking them. -
Erie Canal
The Canal connected the Hudson River in NY to Lake Erie, linking the Great Lakes with the rivers in the US. -
Missouri Compromise
Missouri wanted statehood but free state or slave state could not be decided on. So henry Clay proposed a compromise where north of the 36°30′ latitude, there would be no slavery, while south of it slavery would be allowed. -
Monroe Doctrine
The Monroe Doctrine was the start of US imperialism in Latin America. The doctrine supported Manifest Destiny and expansion of the US through North America. -

Tariff of Abominations
US passed a tariff on imports causing all imported goods prices to go up. -
Indian Removal Act
Jackson called for the removal of Native-American tribes to give more land to white farmers -
Nat Turner's Slave Rebellion
Nat Turner led a violent slave rebellion. Many black and white people were killed. This led to a lot more harsh laws against slaves. -
Trail of Tears
After the Indian removal act as in place, many Native Americans had to leave their homes. They had to walk thousands of miles and many of them died. -
Nullification Crisis
The tariff abomination caused an outrage and Southerners wanted to nullify the tariff. -
Treaty of Wanghia with China
This was the US first treaty with China which allowed trade to get Asian goods. -

Mexican-American War
US wanted Mexicos land for recourses. This caused a war to break out, the US won in the end getting the land. -
Wilmot Proviso
The Whigs only supported the Mexican-American war if the new land would be slavery free. This was not passed but caused further division between Whigs and Democrats. -
Seneca Falls Convention
Women were not allowed to participate in an antislavery convention. So Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Mott created their own women's rights convention. -
California Gold Rush
Gold was found in California which caused thousands of people to travel to California to get gold. -
Compromise of 1850
California applied to come in as a free state. This angered southerners so the government decided to implement new fugitive slaves laws to appease the South. -
Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote Uncle Tom's Cabin
This book was hugely influential. It first off gave the North an ida of how bad the slaves were actually treated, it also help rial up some of the slaves that were in captivity. -
Kansas-Nebraska Act
This allowed people in these territories to vote if they wanted to be a free state or a slave state. -
Bleeding Kansas
Since the Kansas-Nebraska Act established popular sovereignty in the new territories. Many people came to those states to vote for what they wanted. Fighting then broke out between the two groups. -
Dred Scott v. Sandford
Dred Scott was a slave that was brought into a free state so he sued for his freedom. The Court ruled that slaves were not allowed to sue and that he was not free. -
Abraham Lincoln becomes President
Abraham Lincoln was voted in as the 16th President. -
Start of Civil War
The Confederate soldiers first attacked Fort Sumpter and started the Civil War. -
Emancipation Proclamation
Lincoln put into effect the Emancipation Proclamation and said all slaves in the Confederacy were free. This caused many slaves in the South to flee to the North and join the Union Army. -
Battle of Gettysburg
Robert E. Lee of the Confederates charged into Gettysburg which was in the Union. The Union was able to stand their ground and push the Confederates back. This is considered a major turning point in the war. -
Gettysburg Address
Lincoln gave a speech to remember the fallen union soldiers at the battle of Gettysburg. This was the bloodiest battle of the Civil War. -
Black Codes passed
In the South Black cCodes were passed to restrict the rights of newly freed slaves as much as possible. -
Freedmen's Bureau
The Freedmen's Bureau was created to aid all of the freed slaves in anything they might need, such as food and shelter. -
13th Amendment ratified
This amendment freed all slaves. -

The 15th amendment said a state is not allowed to turn away any race from voting. -
Boss Tweed Scandal
Boss Tweed was political leader who basically ran a lot of New York. He was eventually caught and arrested. -
Crédit Mobilier Scandal
Railroad owners created and hired Crédit Mobilier to build the railroads. This made money and made stock prices go up so they would sell. -
Panic of 1873
The Industrial Revolution caused the markets to crash. This pushed people into a big panic. -
Civil Rights Act of 1875
Congress passed yet another bill that restated all states have to treat African-Americans the same as white people. -

The Panic of 1873 caused the railroad companies to have to cut wages of their workers. This caused many workers to go on strike. -

Thomas Edison invents electric light in his workshop at this time. -

This was to help restrict monopolies but did not quite work. The court was still on the monopolies side. -

This court case upheld separate but equal. Things were always separate but never equal. -
Spanish-American War
Spain was trying to take full control of Cuba. The US said Cuba should be free so they declared war on Spain. The US won the war pretty easily. -
Treaty of Paris
This treaty ended the Spanish American War and ceded Cuba, the Philippines, Puerto Rico, and Guam to the US. -
