Harper's Ferry
Harpers Ferry was the target of an assault by an armed band of abolitionists led by John Brown. The raid was intended to be the first stage in a plan to establish an independent stronghold of freed slaves in the mountains of Maryland and Virginia. -

This was when Abraham Lincoln was sworn into office. This was also when the southern states worried about the governement taking away their "rights". -

Within a few days, the two United States Senators from South Carolina submitted their resignations. Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas all left the Union by February. -

This is when the southern states were finally made an offical new nation. It was separtate from the USA. -
1st Battle of Bull Run
Union and Confederate armies clashed near Manassas Junction, Virginia, in the first major land battle of the American Civil War.After fighting on the defensive for most of the day, the rebels rallied and were able to break the Union right flank, sending the Federals into a chaotic retreat towards Washington. The Confederate victory gave the South a surge of confidence and shocked many in the North. -
First Income Tax
The high cost of the War of 1812 brought about the nation's first sales taxes on gold, silverware, jewelry, and watches. In 1817, however, Congress did away with all internal taxes, relying on tariffs on imported goods to provide sufficient funds. -
1st Confiscation Act
It permitted court proceedings for confiscation of any of property being used to support the Confederate independence effort, including slaves. Abraham Lincoln was reluctant to sign the act; he felt that, in light of the Confederacy's recent battlefield victories, the bill would have no practical effect and might be seen as a desperate move. -
Trent Affair
the USS San Jacinto, commanded by Union Captain Charles Wilkes, intercepted the British mail packet RMS Trent and removed, as contraband of war, two Confederate diplomats, James Mason and John Slidell. The initial reaction in the United States was to rally against Britain, threatening war; but President Abraham Lincoln and his top advisors did not want to risk war. -

This is when the two new ironclad ships fought against each other. It was the north vs. the south. It was fought near Hampton, Virginia. -

This is when the north moved down the Tennessee River to take an offensive push into the confederate territory. This more or so won the battle for them. -
Capture of New Orleans
This is when the union captured the city of New Orleans. They did it because it had lasting resentment towards them. -
Homestead/Morrill Land Grant Acts
The Homestead Acts were several United States federal laws that gave an applicant ownership of land, typically called a "homestead", at little or no cost. The Morrill Land-Grant Acts are United States statutes that allowed for the creation of land-grant colleges. -
2nd Confiscation Act
It called for court proceedings for seizure of land and property from disloyal citizens (supporters of the Confederacy) in the South. Under this act, conviction of treason against the U.S. could be punishable by death or carry a minimum prison sentence of five years and a minimum fine of $10,000. -
Antietam
This was the 1st major battle of the Civil War and this is the bloodiest war in American History. It was fought in the Union so the north took the defensive approch but fought at times. -
Emancipation Proclamation
It proclaimed the freedom of slaves in the ten states that were still in rebellion,[2] excluding areas controlled by the Union and thus applying to 3 million of the 4 million slaves in the U.S. at the time. The Proclamation also ordered that suitable persons among those freed could be enrolled into the paid service of United States' forces. -
National Draft Law Instated
Drafting in the North, under this act, began more than a year after the Confederate conscription act, which was approved April 16, 1862. This has been cited as evidence of different abilities or enthusiasm on the two sides in the Civil War. -
Vicksburg
This is when the Union raided Mississippi. They went in with little supplies and the odds were against them but the Union came out vitorious. -
Writ of Habeas Corpus Suspended
This was a law to regulate court proceedings on certain cases. It managed the bringing of prisoners for their court date. -
Capture of Atlanta
This is when the Union took charge of Atlanta. They overwelmed the confederates and took command. -
Lincoln's Re-election
This is when Lincoln wins his re-election. He is sword into office again for his 2nd term. -
Sherman's March to the Sea
This was a march that was supposed to intimidate and scare the confederates into running and forgetting their cause. It was a 60,000 men march. -
13th Amendment
Declared that "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States. It formally abolishing slavery in the United States. -
Surrender at Appomattox
This was the final battle of the war. This is when the cofederacy surrendered to Grant and the Union. -
Capture of Richmond
Throughout the war, the Union tried to gain power and rontrol to the capital of the confederacy but never was able too. However on this day, they finally took it over. -
Lincol's Assassination
This is the day that Abraham Lincoln was shot. John Wilkes Booth was the man that shot him in the theater.
