    Ratification of the Constitution
    The Federalists supported the constitution because they were in favor of a powerful national government. However the Anti-federalists didn't support the constitution because they did not trust a powerful national government and instead wanted the states to have the most government power. The Anti-Federalists ratified the constitution as a compromise to have the Bill of Rights added to the constitution, which satisfied the Anti-federalists because it LIMITED the power of the National Government.

    The Federalist and Anti-Federalist
    The Federalist tended to be bankers and merchants which consisted of supporting industries, while the Anti-Federalist tended to be farmers and supported ways to benefit their livelihood of farming.

    The Federalists believed that the congress should decrease debt and assume all states debt to show other countries that USA has a strong government that could pay off its own debt. The Anti-Federalists opposes this because it would give too much power to the federal government.

    The Federalists believed that the bank should issue national currency, which would stabilize and manage the economy. Hamilton distrusted the states to issue currency. The National Bank would also fund the strong national government. This bank would centralize power in northern cities.

    The Federalists supported a tax on foreign goods, which would raise revenue for the national government and protect American industries. The Democratic Republicans oppossed this as the national government would become too big, taxes would be too high, and it would shift commerce interest from farms to urban. The Democratic Republicans largely opposed this tax to protect farmers.
  • Whiskey Rebellion

    Whiskey Rebellion
    The Whiskey Rebellion was caused by Hamilton wanting to pay off national debt. Farmers in western Pennsylvania saw the tax as an attack on their livelihood. The new tax discriminated against western farmers that produced whisky as the tax made their profits smaller. The farmers started with protest and they decided to rebel by using hostility towards tax collectors. The Anti-Federalists largely opposed the whiskey tax as it was a direct attack on the livelihood of farming.

    Jay's Treaty
    Jay's treaty was a treaty made to protect American sailors from having their ships being seized by the British. The treaty was voted for by the Federalist but voted against it by The Democratic Republic.The Democratic Republic voted against the treaty because it complicated trade with the French and gave Britain power. This demonstrates how the Democratic Republicans were pro-french and the Federalists were pro-Britain.

    First election in American history where political candidates began to run for office. John Adams, a federalists, beat Thomas Jefferson, a Democratic Republican.
  • Alien and Sedition Acts

    Alien and Sedition Acts
    The Alien and Sedition Acts were passed by Federalist. The acts made it harder for immigrants to become citizens and make it illegal to criticize the president or Congress.The Democratic Republic saw this as a threat to Democracy because they were being suppressed of their right to freedom of speech, and french immigrants were being discriminated against by the Alien acts.
  • Election of 1800

    Election of 1800
    This election shifted government power from the Federalist to the Democratic Republicans as Jefferson beat Adams for presidency. Republicanism values were expressed, valuing equality, independence, freedom, and state government. With the Louisiana Purchase, the U.S. expanded and gave the Democratic-Republicans more influence of power over the new territory. This election also caused the Federalist party to deteriorate tremendously.
  • Hartford Convention

    Hartford Convention
    This Federalist convention in New England protested the continuation of the War of 1812 and demanded peace with Britain. Otherwise, New England would leave the union. After the war, the convention was viewed as treason. Therefore, this caused a significantly negative reputation of the Federalist Party, causing the party to collapse along with other reasons.
