Romulus. The Beginning.
Romulus, the son of war god Mars, killed his twin brother Remus. Romulus then named the city after himself. -

Rome as a Monarchy
Began when Romulus killed his twin brother after a disagreement. Many ruled after Romulus' death. High point was when Servius Tullius was in power. He created the first census based off hundreds. This determined how much voting rights the area got and how many soldiers each area had to send to the Roman army. Low point was when Tarquinius Superbus reigned. The family was so evil that the Romans drove them out of Rome. After the family was removed no one else could take the throne. -

Numa Pompilius.
Pompilius reigned from 715 to 673 B.C.E. Pompilius gave Rome its religious practices and ceremonies. -
673 BCE
Tullus Hostilius.
Reigned from 673 to 642 B.C.E. Fought many battles against the civilizations around Rome. -
640 BCE
Ancus Marcius.
Reigned from 640 to 616 B.C.E. Marcius extended Roman territory by defeating the Latins. -
616 BCE
Tarquinius Priscus.
Reigned from 616 to 578 B.C.E. (Tarquin the Elder). Priscus introduced Etruscan culture to Rome. -

Servius Tullius. The High Point.
Reigned from 578 to 534 B.C.E. Developed the first census to count the amount of Roman citizens based on 100. The census of the area influenced decisions like how many voting rights that area was given. Created the caste system that organized citizens based on their wealth. His wicked daughter plotted to kill him so her husband could inherit the throne (Tarquinius Superbus). -
509 BCE
Tarquinius Superbus. The Low Point.
(Tarquin the Proud). In the early 500's B.C.E Tarquinius was the final monarch. The patricians, the wealthy landowners, opposed him. They finally overthrew him in 509 B.C.E. -
Period: 509 BCE to 27 BCE
The Roman Republic.
The beginning of the Republic period is when Tarquinius Superbus was overthrown. New political offices were created. Two consuls were to replace the king. Sometimes a dictator would replace the consuls, but could not hold supreme command after a certain amount of time. The senate advised magistrates and the people of Rome. There were two assemblies: centuriate assembly and the tribal assembly. Centuriate focused on war while the tribal focused on nonmilitary. It did most of the legislating. -

It was written on 12 bronze tablets and was publicly displayed in the forum. -

The tribe swept down the Po river and took an abundance of gold. -

After Rome became increasingly dominant, the Latins decided to fight against Rome to maintain independence. -

Rome wanted to expand through conquest and colonization. -

Also caused because of want for expansion. Was fought against the Greek towns in the south. -

The Punic Wars.
Rome wanted control over the Mediterranean. This led to conflict with a commercial power in Africa called "Carthage." This ended when Rome occupied Carthage and destroyed it in 146 B.C.E -

Beginning of the Roman Empire was when Augustus became the first emperor. Many emperors came after him, including the "Five Good Emperors." The High point was when the Serverus Dynasty ruled. They expanded Rome and defeated the Parthians. The Low point was when Valens was defeated. After his defeat the Western Roman Empire declined. -
