The Alien and Sedition Acts were four federal laws restricting immigration and making certain criticism of the government illegal. The laws were very controversial in their own day, as they remain in the present day.

    Spanish officials, still in charge of New Orleans, closed port to Americas. American ministers tryed to buy New Orleans from France but failed. Then France ministers offered the entire Louisiana Territory( including N.O.) for 15 mill. Jefferson and most Americans approved of the purchase.

    Marbury vs. Madison
    Jefferson refused to honor the commissions that hadn't been commissioned under Adams' presidency, claiming they were invalid because they hadn't been delivered before the end of Adams' term. William Marbury applied to the Supreme Court for a writ of mandamus to compel Jefferson's Secretary of State, James Madison, to deliver the commissions. As a result, Marbury sued Madison.

    The Lewis and Clark was the first transcontinental expedition to the Pacific Coast. The expedition was commissioned by Thomas Jefferson with the purpose of finding a "direct and practicable water communication across this continent, for the purposes of commerce with Asia." Lewis and Clarks' goals were to study the area's plants, animal life, and geography, and to discover how the region could be exploited economically.
