    Native Americans travel on this ancient land bridge from Asia to America between 20,000 and 40,000 years ago. They are the first people on the american continent.

    pre columbian era
    period before Christopher Columbus's arrival in the new world, when north america was populated by native Americans. Different native american tribes were spread across America.
  • 1492

    Columbus finds America

    Columbus finds America
    while trying to find a better trading route to India, Christopher Columbus instead discovered the new world. This later sparked the age of discovery and columbian exchange.

    Age of discovery
    period between the 15th and 18th century where Europeans made contact and sought out to explore the new world and colonize the new world. This was for them to come live a better life style.

    columbian exchange
    exchange of goods ,ideas,diseases, animals and people between the new world and Europe. There were good and bad outcomes. The great plains Indians were able to hunt better with horses. But diseases were brought which killed lots of native Americans.

    Spanish system of granting land to the colonist in the new world. In reality the Spanish just tortured and abused the natives.

    There were two early Spanish conquistadors who went pot to conquer Mexico , central america, and Peru. Hernan Cortes conquered mexico, and Francisco Pizarro conquered Peru.
  • Pennsylvania is founded

    Pennsylvania is founded
    William Penn establishes the colony Pennsylvania to make it a safe haven for Quakers. He also wanted to have good relationships with native Americans. Pennsylvania used its rich farmland and rivers to make money.

    Unit 2 Jamestwon
    Jamestown is founded on a swampy area known as Chesapeake by men who were heading to Virginia for a company to find gold and other valuable resources . It was named after king James I and became the first permanent English settlement. Tobacco becomes the cash crop to save Jamestown financially.

    A war caused by the killing a English fur trader from a tribe. The result of the war was a major loss of life for the Pequot tribe. All of the tribe was either killed or sold into slavery.
  • Roger Williams finds Rhode Island

    Roger Williams finds Rhode Island
    Roger Williams expressed opinions that went against the church, so he left and created his own colony (Rhode Island). People could practice religion here freely.
  • Bacon's rebellion

    Bacon's rebellion
    The tide water region which consisted of wealthy residents had dominated most of the land to grow things which many poor farmers did not like. It did not help that governor Berkeley raised taxes on poor farmers and refusing them to take over native american land. So a farmer named Nathaniel Bacon took matters into his own hands to take over natives land and drive the governor out of Jamestown.

    King James II attempted to merge the new England colonies into one political unit. This angered the colonist be cause citizens could not participate in the government.

    Salem Witch trials
    Young girls behaved strangely after hearings of voodoo, then started accusing older women of witch craft. Those who were accused were hanged (over 19 people were hanged). The Salem witch trials highlighted the dangers of religious extremism.

    The French and Indian war was fought because of imperial dominance in North America. French and Natives vs. England and Colonies. England wins and gains control of the ohio river valley.

    After the French was defeated in The seven years war , Natives continued fighting because they did not want surrender their land. The British signed the proclamation of 1763 which stated they would not settle west of the Appalachians.

    Sugar act
    The seven years war left the British in a big debt , the British parliament placed a tariff on sugar, coffee , wines and molasses. Colonist avoided the tax by smuggling and bribing tax collectors.
  • Boston massacare

    Boston massacare
    British soldiers fired into a crowd of colonist who were making fun of them. Five colonist were killed . This event was used to call for war against England

    The tax on tea was not lifted , so the sons of liberty dressed up as native Americans boarding a ship then began dumping the tea in the water. The British punish the colonist harshly because the tea is worth 1 million.

    The American revolution begins
    Citizens of Massachusetts prepare to fight the British because of the coercive acts. The shots fired at Lexington and Concord between American and British troops was known as " a shot heard around the world". However the colonist are defeated at the Battle of bunker hill.

    The continental congress meet in Philadelphia to issue the Declaration of independence. Two purposes the declaration served is political servings of all ties between colonies and great Britain, lay out serves of grievances the colonist had towards the king. Thomas Jefferson was the main author.
  • Election of 1800

    Election of 1800
    Jefferson and Burr received the same amount of electoral votes. The issue was decided in the House of Representatives, where each state had 1 vote.
    Alexander Hamilton helped secure the Victory for Thomas Jefferson.
  • Louisiana purchase

    Louisiana purchase
    Napoleon had given up on an American empire and wanted funds to conquer Europe so he offered all of the Louisiana territory for purchase. Thomas Jefferson agreed to the deal , despite him thinking he violated the constitution. Doubled the size of the U.S.

    Impressment and ship seizures continued moving the U.S. Closer to war with Britian. War was small and disappointing- economic problems from the embargo act , small military, invasion of Canada was a debacle.

    New England federalist meeting to discuss possible actions to take against the democratic republicans because of the war of 1812. After the war the federalist looked like a bunch of complainers and labeled unpatriotic.

    John monroes presidency was known as the era of good feelings. There was a sense of independence and national pride. Tensions below the surface over tariffs, slavery, and political power.
  • Nullification crisis

    The tariff of 1828 which was to be placed on all imported goods was passed. South Carolina agreed to not collect the new tariff. Andrew Jackson threaten to hang their leaders but the tariff was lowered.

    The telegraph was invented by Samuel Morse. With the telegraph it took only seconds to communicate with another city. Brought people and the nation closer.

    Unit 5 Missouri comprmise of 1850
    Compromise composed of 4 parts : enforcement of fugitive Slave act. California would be admitted as a free state. New Mexico and Utah were to decide if they were free or slave through popular sovereignty. Banning slave trade in D.C.

    So many people who supported the compromise of 1850 opposed this act. Slavery would be decided by popular sovereignty in territories of Kansas and Nebraska.

    Supreme Court ruled against Scott, claiming that slaves were property and could be taken anywhere. Slavery Protected everywhere because of property rights in the constitution.

    John brown hoped to spark a slave revolt by seizing federal arsenal at harpes ferry. He's executed and south sees him as a terrorist.

    Abraham Lincoln wins the presidential election of 1860. Due to this South Carolina seceded from the union. Seven other states that secede from the confederate states of America.
  • Battle of Antietam

    Battle of Antietam
    First major battle of the civil war that took place on northern soil. Single bloodiest day in U.S. History: over 23,000 killed. Abraham Lincoln
  • Battle of Gettysburg

    Battle of Gettysburg
    Bloodiest battle of the war. Considered the turning point of the civil war because confederates retreated allowing the north to regain control of the war. Becomes a defensive war for confederates.
  • Unit 6 Civil rights bill

    Unit 6  Civil rights bill
    Bill was intended to destroy black codes by giving African Americans fully citizenship. president Johnson vetoed it but congress overruled him. This was replaced by the 14th amendment.

    Authorized use of federal troops to subdue violence from the KKK and enforce the 14th amendment.
  • The battle of Little Bighorn

    The battle of Little Bighorn
    With the discovery of gold in the Sioux land many began settling there. Chief Red Bull assembled an army of natives to drive the settlers. All of general clusters men are dead and it's a victory for the Sioux.

    In order to avoid conflict between northern republicans and southern democrats an agreement was reached. The south would let the north get their president Hayes and the north would remove union troops from the south. Marks the end of reconstruction.

    With the rise of nativism, many feared that the mass influx of immigrants would take opportunities and they were different. This act prohibited Chinese immigration and limited the rights to Chinese Americans.

    Economic crisis caused by bank failures, major corporations going bankrupt, and unemployment. The American people cried out for help but the government continued with lassies faire policy.

    workers at Pullman factory went on strike because of wage cuts and lay offs. The strike grew violent with railcars being destroyed along with other equipment. Federal troops were sent in because the strike interfered with federal mail.

    Cuba rebel against Spanish rule caught the eye of many in America along with the interest of sugar plantations and it reminded them of the American revolution. The explosion of the USS Maine sparked the Spanish American war.

    These acts were steps to assure that American citizens would not interfere with American victory in Europe. Prohibited interference in military recruitment, support of enemies, and any form of speech criticizing the government.

    The 18th amendment banned the selling and distribution of alcohol from 1919-1933. It was thought to help keeping people out of trouble and from being drunk. Proved to be bad for the economy and crime rose.

    After the Russian revolution the spread of communism was s fear to many Americans and were worried it might take over America. A quota was put in to place to limit the number of immigrants from each country.

    The stock market crash of 1929 lead to an economic crisis known as the great depression. it was caused with people borrowing money they could not pay back, buying stock credit, overproduction, and bank rushes.

    when Franklin Roosevelt is elected president he promised a new deal to help the struggling united states during the great depression. The new deal consisted of a series of programs to help different segments of the economy recover.

    With the rising super power of the soviet union spreading communist to struggling nations, Truman asked congress for finance to prevent countries from falling to communism. The Truman doctrine would provide cash for struggling nations to prevent them from falling to communism.

    This case ruled that segregation in schools was unconstitutional. it overruled Plessy vs Fergusons separate but equal.

    The united states discovers nuclear missiles in Cuba aimed at the united states. The united states formed a blockade around Cuba to prevent the soviet union from delivering supplies. The world was on the brink of nuclear war for 13 days.

    While riding through Dallas Texas john f Kennedy becomes the 2nd president to be assassinated. Lyndon b Johnson becomes president and continues his wishes.

    In memory of john f Kennedy and march on Washington Lyndon b Johnson pressured congress to pass civil right act. It made discrimination illegal in the work place, voting requirements, and government sector.

    Miranda v. Arizona
    All accused criminals had the right to an attorney even if they could not afford one. All criminals must be told there 5th and 6th amendment rights.

    Former governor of California and movie star is elected in 1980. As a conservative he believed in a smaller government, tax cuts, and deregulation.

    The NASA space shuttle challenger exploded shortly after take off. Killed several astronauts including the first teacher to serve as an astronaut, christa McAuliffe.

    Saddam Hussein and the Iraqi army invade neighboring Kuwait. The us sends troop to turn back the Iraqi army and liberate Kuwait.

    on Christmas day in 1991, Gorbachev resigns as leader of the soviet union. The soviet union is dissolved into 15 individual states. the 50 year standoff came to an end.

    Bill clinton is impeached
    Bill Clinton was the second president in us history to be impeached. The two impeachment charges were for perjury and obstruction of justice. However he was acquitted.

    A aeries of suicide attacks by al- Qaeda upon the united states. 19 hijackers with al-Qaeda hijacked four commercial airliners. They were crashes into the twin towers, the pentagon and in a field in Pennsylvania.
