Landing
On Feburary the 7th the first known landing on Antarctica was peformed by Captain John Davis. He and his men spent winter in Antarctica as their ship had been driven off shore. The party were eventually rescued the following summer -
Discoveries
In 1840 James Clark Ross took two ships to Antarctica. He discovered Mount Erebus which was named after his Ship the Erebus. The scientist who was travelling with Ross identified 145 species of fish. -
Captain Scott
Captain Robert Falcon Scott lead his first Antarctic Expedition with Ernest Shackleton and Edward Wilson. They were forced too turn back within two months because of suffering from scurvy and snow blindness. -
South Pole
The Norwegian Roald Amundsen and his party of five are the first person to reach the South Pole. -
Death of Scott and journey of Mawson
Scott reaches the South Pole only to discover that he has been beaten by Amundsen. Him and his party perish from exhaustion. Mawson reaches his base barely alive as his two companions have died. -
Shackleton
In October Shackleton returned to Antarctica in order to complete his goal of reaching the South Pole. His goal was not achieved. An accident happened with the ship and the men were rescued. -
First woman on Antarctica.
Caroline Mikkelsen is the first woman to set foot on Antarctica.
