13th Amendment
The 13th amendent was passed through congress on December 6, 1865. This amendment abolished slavery. It states "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction." This is important because it game all humans in America the right to freedom. -
The Freedmen's Bureau is Established
The Freedmen's Bureau was established on March 3, 1865. The Freedmen's Bureau was signifigant because it helped newly freed slaves and poor whites. The job as a Freedmen’s Bureau agent was to make the transition from slavery to freedom as smooth as possible. They built schools for the former slaves. They also fed and clothed former war refugees, blacks, and whites. -
Abraham Lincoln Assassination
Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president of the United States. He was assassinated on April 15, 1865 at Ford's Theater in Whashington, D.C. by John Wilkes Booth. Abraham Lincoln was important because he played a vital role in the Civil War as the leader of the Union. He was also important because he was the president who created the Emancipation Proclomaton which abolished slavery. -
Black Codes Passed
The Black Codes were passed on December 7, 1865. Black Codes were meant to segregate blacks and whites in any public place. They were not allowed to use the same schools, bathrooms, water fountains, or churches. This is signifigant because this made the blacks feel like they were not as important as the whites. It also caused tension between the two races. -
KKK Established
The Klu Klux Klan was established on December 24, 1865. They used intimidation, and violence to strike fear into the lives of African Americans. The goal of the KKK was to segregate the blacks from the whites and make sure that the blacks felt lower than the whites. They used violence, segregation, and intimidation to make sure that the Blacks were deprived of their rights. This is important because it caused major racial tension. -
14th Amendment
The 14th amendent was passed on July 9th, 1868 The 14th amendment gives all natural born American's citizenship.It states “all persons born or naturalized in the United States,” includes former slaves recently freed. In addition, it forbids states from denying any person "life, liberty or property, without due process of law"or to "deny to any person within its jurisdiction equal protection of the laws."This is important because it allowed anyone who was born in the United States natural rights. -
The Constitution of 1868 is Ratified
The Constitution of 1868 was ratified on on July 28, 1868 and South Carolina was readmitted to the union. It was made to abolish debtor's prison, provide public education, abolish property ownership, gave some rights to women, and created counties. This was signifigant because it now allowed blacks and whites to attend the same schools and get equal education. -
Transcontinental Railroad is Completed
On May 10, 1869 the Transcontinental Railroad was completed. This allowed an easier way to get goods across America to make more money. This is signifigant because it laid the foundation for modern day industrial America, created more jobs, and created big business. It also changed our society because people depended on the railroad to transport livestock and goods and it made it easier to travel and migrate. -
15th Amendment
The 15th amendment was passed on February 3, 1870. This amendment gave every American the right to vote. It states "right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude." This is signifigant because it gave African American's the right to vote, and to have a say in the government. -
Eight Box Law and Poll Tax
In the year of 1882 the Eight Box Law and Poll Tax were passed. It took advantage of the high rates of illiteracy of poor former slaves. Illiterate voters could not identify the box without the help of white officials and they also had to pay a tax in order to vote. This is important because it made it very difficult for African Americans to vote.
