After 1940, the Nazis occupied Holland and instituted restrictive laws forcing Jews to wear yellow stars to identify themselves. The Germans forced the Jews to turn in their bicycles and shop only during certain hours. Anne’s father explains that they will likely have to go into hiding soon. He tells her that they will “leave on their own accord” instead of waiting for the Germans to take them
Margot, tells her that their father had received a call-up notice from the SS, the elite Nazi guard., her family leaves their home and heads to their hiding spot Eventually, the entire family arrives at their hiding place in Otto Frank’s office building. -
July 12- October 9th 1942
Ann likes her new hide out in the annex. but she expresses how upset she is about not being able to go outside and that she is terrified that they will be discovered and shot.
The van Daan family arrives . Anne is terrified because she thinks it is the Gestapo. Anne likes to imagine that she is in Switzerland with money. -
October 14- November 20
Mr. Frank becomes ill, but the family cannot call a doctor. Another worker from mr. Franks office stays in the annex and tells Anne about whats going on. Anne thinks that they are lucky to be in hiding, and she thinks of the suffering her friends must endure because they are Jewish. Anne writes that she is very upset by the news, but she resolves that she cannot spend all her time crying. . -

Anne writes about what she plans to do when they are able to leave the annex. She says she would be so overjoyed she would not know where to start, but she wants to go back to school again. Two air-raid sirens sound in one day as bombs fall on Amsterdam , but Anne is able to stay somewhat positive. -
November 17 1943 - january 28 1944

Anne comes down with the flu and feels jealous of the Mrs. Kleiman’s children. Her children can go outside and play with friends, while Anne’s family and friends are trapped in the annex . -
November 28 - June 13 1943
The annex makes Ann unhappy, she misses her friends and being with children her own age. Ann talks about how she is getting annoyed with everyone she lives with. She also talks about how life outside the annex consists of Jews being taken from their homes and non jewish children wondering the streets hungry. Mr. Frank predicts the war will end in 1943. -
January 28- March 11 1944
Ann feels she has changed alot as a person and does not feel she is superficial. She makes friends with peter the van Daan boy living with her in the annex. Anne also sadly notes that the police have arrested Mr. M., a man who had provided her family with food. -
March 14 - April 1944
Anne wonders what would happen if she published a novel about the annex, and thinks that ten years after the war people would find her diary very interesting. another break-in occurs. Mr. van Daan tries to scare the burglars away by shouting“Police!” but the residents see someone shine a flashlight through a gap in the wall The residents lie on the floor, are petrified, but it is Mrs. Kleiman -

On top of that, The air raids on the city are incredibly heavy and Anne and peter develop a closer relationship when he kisses her on the cheek.
