Animal Farm Timeline

  • Old Major's Speech

In chapter 1, Old Major gives the animals a political speech about the evils inflicted upon the animals by their human keepers and to rebel against him.
  • Beasts of England

Old major had explained to the animals about a dream he had during a meeting in the barn and how there was a song his mother used to sing that was called the Beasts of England. They used this song as motivation and as their pledge to fight for their freedom against Jones.
  • Old Major's death

This inspires the animals to carry on with his plan, to rebel against Jones and fight for their freedom on the farm.
  • The Seven Animal commandments

The animals made the seven commandments to ensure that they would not end up like the humans or Jones. The commandments were:
    1. whatever goes upon two legs is and enemy
    2. whatever goes upon four legs or has wings is a friend
    3.no animal shall wear clothes
    4. no animal shall dring alcohol
5.no animal shall sleep in a bed
    6. no animal shall kill any other animal
    7. all animals are equal
  • Animals first harvest

the first harvest the animals had by themselves was successful and they shared the harvest according to the body size of each animal.
  • Windmill Plans

Snowball made plans for a windmill to be constructed and thought it was a good idea, but Napoleon doesn't think it's a good idea.
  • Jones tries to take back the farm

Jones comes back to the farm with more people to try and take back the farm, but the animals were prepared and ready to fight and they had won.
  • Snowball is chased away

Snowball had made a speech about the windmill but Napoleon had stomped in with his dogs and had snowball chased out.
  • Winter Harvest

The winter harvest ahead would hold many challenges because they had been working on the windmill more than the farm. They were short on food, and the process of building the windmill was slow because of the snow.
  • Trading with the humans

One morning Napoleon had announced that he decided that the animals needed to trade with the humans for supplies they would inevitably need and could not be found on the farm.
  • Pigs moving into the Farmhouse

The pigs moved into the farm house because they "needed a quiet place to work" but they were sleeping on the beds, which one of animals remember that was one of the seven commandments, but it's okay because they're not using sheets on the bed.
  • Windmill falls over

A giant storm had come through the farm and the winds knocked over the windmill. The winds took the titles of the roof of the barn and all of their work had been destroyed. Napoleon then decided to have the animals rebuild the windmill and make it thicker so it wouldn't fall again.
  • Confessions

Napoleon asked the animals if they had any confessions, many animals did. Many had admitted that snowball was the head of most of the confessions and Napoleon was furious. He ordered animals to be killed and broke the commandments.
  • Napoleon gains more power

As Napoleon really becomes leader by having himself referred to as leader Napoleon and he barely left the farm house. He also had Squealer tell the animals that they no longer needed to sing the "Beasts of England" because it was for the rebellion, and the rebellion was over.
  • The Battle of the Windmill

15 men came to the farm, most of them with guns, and started shooting at the animals and blew up the windmill. The animals lost some of their courage as the windmill fell but fought back and won the battle but many animals were wounded along with Boxer.
  • The pigs drink alcohol

They find Jone's old whiskey in the basement while celebrating the win of the battle. Napoleon decided it was important to grow crop necessary to brew and bought the equipment. But his decision broke the 5th amendment they had made.
  • The next winter

As winter approached, the rations were low and many of the animals had their rations cut down except for the pigs and the dogs, they got to eat as much as they needed.
  • Boxer

Boxer's foot was injured and never was checked and continued to work which caused him to fall over while he was working and the cart of stones landed on top of him. Napoleon thought he should've been taken to an animal hospital but the truck he was put in had "Horse Slaughter and Glue Boiler" on the side and the animals were unable to stop the van. A few days later they held a memorial for him.
  • Years later

The farm became bigger and the pigs, even Napoleon, had started to walk on two legs. Which caused the sheep to burst into the song "four legs good, two legs bad."
  • Only one commandment

All the commandments were marked out and only one was written that read "All animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others."
  • Man or Pig?

The animals had heard noise from the farm house, when they investigated the noise they had found the pigs sitting at a table with humans playing a game of cards and drinking beers with them. This is when the animals realized they couldn't tell the difference between a pig and a man.
