Edward the Confessor
Edward spent 40 years in Normandy. He's called the confessor because he was seen more as a monk than a king. Godwin, Earl of Wessex was chosen to run the country. Though he married Godwin's daughter, his vow of chastity left them childless. He chose William of Normandy as his successor. -

Won a decisive victory over the Viking Danes and was declared King of all England. To create unity, he married a Anglian princess and coined the phrase "Englisc" to describe the Anglo-Saxons as one people with one language.
