Andrew Jackson's Birth
Andrew Jackson was born on March 15, 1767 in the Waxhaws border region between The Carolinas. His parents were Scots-Irish colonists by the name of Andrew and Elizabeth Hutchinson Jackson. Andrew Jackson had two older brothers named Hugh and Robert. Unfortunatly, his exact birth date is unknown because his mother was struggling to make a trip home from burying Jackson's Father, who died three weeks before Jackson was born. -
Andrew Jackson enlists in The Revolutionary Army
During the American Revolutionary War, Jackson joined the militia at age thirteen with his two brothers, Hugh and Robert. His eldest brother, Hugh, died of heat exhaustion and both Robert and Jackson were captured by the British. They were held as prisoners and nearly starved to death. After being freed, Robert and his mother both died which caused Andrew to blame the British for his loss. He was then orphaned at age 14. -
Battle of New Orleans
The Battle of New Orleans was the first major battle of the War of 1812. Andrew Jackson led the American Forces against the British Army and defeated them on their plans of seizing New Orleans. Jackson established himself as a national military hero. Afterwards, The Treaty of Ghent was signed on December 24, 1814. Although due to the lack of communication, the battle ended several days later. -
Battle of Horseshoe Bend
On March 27, 1814, The Battle of Horseshoe Bend was fought during the War of 1812 in Alabama. Here, United States forces combined with Indian allies defeated the Red Sticks, a Indian creek tribe who opposed American Expansion. The Battle of Horseshoe Bend was the major battle of The Creek War. Andrew Jackson's purpose was to "clear" Alabama for American settlement. -
Election of 1824
The Election of 1824 made the final mark on the Federalists-Republican party.The winner of the electoral college was Andrew Jackson. But the decision was up to the House of Representatives, Clay secured the vote for John Quincy Adams. Jackson denounced it as a "Corrupt Bargain" even though it was still constitional according to the laws. -
Election of 1828
Jackson's 1828 campaign was the first presidential campaign to appeal directly to voters through a political organization. His campaign was based on cleaning out the corruptionists and restore purity and economy in government. -
Indian Removal Act
Indian Removal act authorized President Andrew Jackson to negotiate with the Native Americans in the Southern United States. His purpose was for their removal to federal territory west of the Mississippi River in exchange for their homelands. -
Worcester v. Georgia
The US Supreme Court made a decision that Cherokee Indians constituted a nation holding distinct sovereign powers. It gave tribal sovereignity but did not prevent their removal from their homelands due to a relentless campaign by Georgia. -
Nullification Process
South Carolina state convention declared the tariff unconstitutional and hence null and void. South Carolina's legislature followed up with measures to block the collection of federal custom revenues at the state's ports and to defend the state with arms against federal incursion. -
Bank War
The Bank War was the struggle to become president between Andrew Jackson & Nicholas Biddle. President of the Bank of the United States. Andrew Jackson was opposed to the idea of the bank, b/c he believed it had too much economic power in its hands of an "elite" club uncontrolled by the people. Andrew Jackson also included saying, "The bank is trying to kill me, but I will kill it." Later when the recharter for the bank csme, both houses of congress passed it & Andrew Jackson vetoed it.
