Jackson's Birth
His parents were Andrew and Elizabeth Hutchinson Jackson, who were Scottish-Irish immigrants. Jackson was supposedly born in his uncle's cabin in the Waxhawks region, but no one knows for sure. -
Battle of New Orleans
Before the news of the Treaty of Ghent reached the US, the Battle of New Orleans broke out. The US troops under Andrew Jackson, hid behind cotton bales and easily killed the British troops. -
Election of 1824
In the Election of 1824, William Crawford, Henry Clay, Andrew Jackson, and John Quincy Adams ran. When there was no clear winner, the decision was turned over to the House of Representatives. Clay used his power in the HOR to help Adams win and in return he became the secretary of state, this is known as the Corrupt Bargain. -
Indian Removal Act
The Indian Removal Act gave Jackson the power to move Native Americans west of the Mississippi River, so Georgia started sending them to the Indian Territory. Many Native Americans fought against this, including Chief Oscela of the Seminoles and they even fought the Seminole Wars. This led to the Trail of Tears and they had to leave their homes and along the way 4000 people died. -
Nullification Crisis
When the Tariff of 1828 was passed, the South was angry because it hurt their trade with Europe. South Carolina even threatened to secede and passed the Nullification Act. To avoid this, Jackson passed a compromise made by Henry Clay that lowered the tariff and gave Jackson the power to use military control if South Carolina tried to secede. -
Bank War
Jackson believed that the national bank was too powerful and uncontitutional. When the bank needed to be resigned, he decided to get rid of it by vetoing the recharter.
