Andrew Jackson begins his first term as president. -
Indian Removal Act
Gave Jackson permission to pursue lands east of the Mississippi, which in turn allotted land to the west of the Mississippi to the Indians. -
Peggy Eaton Affair
Social scandal; John Eaton, Secretary of War, stayed with the Timberlakes when in Washington, and there were rumors of his affair with Peggy Timberlake before her husband died in 1828; cabinet members snubbed the socially unacceptable Mrs. Eaton; Jackson sided with Eatons; affair helped dissolve cabinet. -
1831 Treaty with France
France agrees to settle claims of spoliation made by the US which date back to the Napoleonic wars. France agrees to a payment of $5 million but then refuses to make a payment. After being warned of American naval superiority, France begins to pay in 1836. -
Georgia v. Worchester
Supreme Court Decision - Cherokee Indians were entitled to federal protection from the actions of state governments which would infringe on the tribe's sovereignty - Jackson ignored it -
First Democratic Convention
Baltimore, Maryland: Jackson is selected to run as the Democratic canidiate, with Martin Van Buren running as his VP. -
Jackson Vetoes the Bank of the United States
Jackson vetoes the rechartering of the second BOTUS. -
Tariff of 1832
Congress passes tariff which reduces tariff on goods from 47% to 25%. -
Jackson Reelection
Jackson is reelected with Van Buren as his VP. -
Jackson Condemns Nullification
Jackson reinforces the power of the federal government by condeming nullification in South Carolina. -
Force Bill
Bill passed by congress which allowed Andrew Jackson to use military force in South Carolina to get them to accept the tariffs. -
Henry Clay Intoduces Lower Tariff
Henry Clay proposes a bill which further lowers the tariff of 1832. -
Compromise Tariff

Edmund Roberts
Andrew Jackson makes Edmund Roberts a "special agent" of the US whose sole purpose is to negoiate international trade treaties. Because of this, the US makes its first treaties with many far eastern governments, such as Siam (present day Thailand) -

Senate accuses Jackson's action of removing federal money from the BOTUS as unconstitutional. -

The Seminoles attempted to retain their land in Florida, but after the United States fought the most expensive Indian War they had ever seen, the Native Americans were forced to move west. -
