    In 1848 forced out by famine and economic troubles, the Carnegies move to a poor area in Allegheny Pennisylvannia. Within the year young Carnegie aquired a job as a bobbin boy for $1.20 a week. His work schedule was 12 hours a week for 6 days.

    At 15 years old he gains a job as a telegraph messenger for a railroad company for $2.50 a week. He was very skilled and worked hard at his job.

    Pennisylvania Railroad

    Carnegie then moved in 1853 to the Pennisylvania Railroad Company. His salary advanced up to $4.00 a week, but that didn't last for long and he quickly advanced to be superintendent of the Pittsburgh division. At this post he gained aqired many skills from Thomas A. Scott who was a mentor to Carnegie. He learned such things as communication and management.

    A Time for Industry

    The first time Carnegie donates money for a foundation was in 1885 to a Pittsburgh public library for $500,000. He would soon make all of that money back by buying out rival Homestead Steelworks in 1888, and then J. Edgar Thompson Steelworks in 1889.

    In this time he combines all of his mills and assets into one company, Carnegie Steel Company. Soon his company alone would be out producing all of Great Britian in steel manufacturing.

    "The man who dies rich, dies a disgrace,"

    In 1901 Carnegiedonated 2 million to the self named Carnegie Insitute of Technology. In 1904 Carnegie then founds the Carnegie hero fund, who recongnizes people for their charitable donations to less fourtunate peoples. In 1911, in then donaes 10 million dollars to Carnegie Institute of Technology for a 100 ft. telescope on top of Mt. Wilson.

    On February 26, Andrew Carnegie sells his company, Carnegie Steel, to J.P. Morgan. The company was sold for 480 milion dollars, the largest personal transaction in history. Carnegie's shares came to $225,639,00.

    Died August 11 in Lenox, Massachusetts. At the time of his death he had given away $350,695,653.
