She continues to publish books for children and young adults about African American histories and cultures through biographies and fictional stories as well. She has published 51 books.

She wins the Coretta Scott King Book Award for her book “Hand in Hand: Ten Black Men Who Changed America,” and Bryan Collier, illustrator of “I, Too, Am America,” -

Andrea is inducted into the New York State Writers Hall of Fame in 2020 but the induction ceremony is delayed to 2021 because of the coronavirus pandemic. -
