    The earliest written collection of Roman laws, drawn up by patricians. These twelve codes became the foundation of Roman law. The laws talked about property, crime, family, theft, marriage, and inheritance. They were engraved on tablets of metal and put on display at the Forum in the city of Rome so that everyone could see them.

    Patricians got an extra office in return, creation the urban praetor who also had imperium. The 1-year mandate later replaced priests in civil procedure.

    Hortensian Law

    Made all resolutions passed by the Plebeian Council, known as plebiscita, binding on all citizens. It was passed by the dictator Quintus Hortensius in a compromise to bring the plebeians back from their secession to the Janiculum. It was the final result of the long struggle between patricians and plebeians, where the plebeians would periodically secede from the city in protest when they felt they were deprived of their rights.
