    Battle of Marathon

    Battle of Marathon
    The Battle of Marathon occurred during the first attack on Greece led by the Persians. This war was battled between the combined forces of Plataea and Athens, to prevent the incoming invasion of King Darius' Persian army. The reason for their attack was due to the aid that the Athenians had sent against the Persians. They sailed into Marathon for their supposed vengeance against Greece, but after a few days of restless war the Greek forces managed to extinguish the Persian army.

    Battle of Thermopylae

    Battle of Thermopylae
    The Battle of Thermopylae was fought between an alliance of Greek armies, and the persian army led by Xerxes, the son of King Darius who swore his revenge upon Greece after his failed invasion in the Battle of Marathon. The Persian army were prepared this time with armies upon armies and plenty of navy fleets. The Greeks attempted to block the incoming invasion with 7,000 men, but failed with only a few hundred who survived, 300 who were spartans. This battle went on for seven days.

    Battle of Aegospotami

    Battle of Aegospotami
    The Battle of Aegospotami commenced in the ocean, considering that it was a naval battle. This was the final battle of the Peloponnesian war. During this battle, a Spartan fleet conquered the Athenian navy, which then ended the war considering that the Athenians could not interact with other countries knowing that their empire was no longer in control of the ocean.

    Battle of Leuctra

    Battle of Leuctra
    The Battle of Leuctra was fought between the Boeotians and the Spartans. This great battle took place in the territory of Leuctra, a small neighbourhood village in Boeotia. This battle was where the Spartans defeat against the Thebans shattered their great image over Greece which they had gained during their victory in the Peloponnesian War. After their infamous battle, Spartans started to decrease in their popularity amongst Greece.

    Battle of Mantinea

    Battle of Mantinea
    The Battle of Mantinea was fought in two parts, this being the second. The first battle was earlier in 418 BC. This battle however was fought between the Thebans, along with the Arcadians and the Boeotians, against the Spartans. This battle was a decider of which alliance would have dominance over Greece. After the death of Epaminondas, their arm was hit hard by the spartans, but their defeat weakened both alliances, and paved a clear path for the Macedonian conquest.

    Battle of Chaeronea

    Battle of Chaeronea
    The Battle of Chaeronea was fought in Boeotia, at the city of Chaeronea. This battle was fought between an alliance of Greek states, such as Athens and Thebes, against the Macedonians, led by Philip II. The battle was long, but in the end the Macedonians turned out victorious, leaving the Spartans with another disappointment. With his victory, Philip had brought peace to Greece, by ending the Third Sacred War.

    Battle of Granicus River

    Battle of Granicus River
    The Battle of Granicus River was held in 334 BC, and was fought between Alexander the Great and the Persian Empire. Alexander managed to defeat the invasion of the Persian Empire, and a large group of Greek mercenaries. The Battle was located next to the Crossing of the Granicus River. This was known as the first of three major battle of Alexander the Great against the Persian empire.
