The ultimate result of this war was it did not end, and made both sides want to keep fighting for their cause.

However, Lee's retreat which began this battle gave Lincoln the opportunity for his Emancipation Proclamation.

A few weeks after the battle, Abraham Lincoln removed the Union commander of this battle, Burnside, from command of the army of the Potomac.

It was unknown that he would be killed just a few weeks later by a man present at the inauguration.

He had no choice but to surrender, which included Richmond. It was at this point at the war when the advantages the north had (population and materials) had been crucial.
