Politics- George Washington's Farewell Address
When George Washington finished his second term of office, he left the American people with the farewell address. In it, he warned them to not form alliances with France or Britain and to not form political parties. He hoped that this would help keep the new country from failing. -
Politics- Election of 1796
In the election of 1796, Federalist John Adams ran against Democratic-Republican Thomas Jefferson. Adams receives the most votes and becomes president, while Jefferson becomes vice president. This was a problem because the president and vice president were of separate parties, so the Twelfth Amendment was created. -
Politics- Election of 1800
In the election of 1800, Adams and Jefferson competed for president again. This time, however, Jefferson won. The transistion of of the government from one politcial party to another in charge was actually very smooth. This election is also called the revolution of 1800 for this reason. -
Expansion- The Louisiana Purchase
There were many tensions between France and America, so President Jefferson sent James Monroe and Robert R. Livingston to negotiate with Napoleon. Although their original goal was to obtain the port of New Orleans, they ended up buying the entire Louisiana Territory for $15 million. Napoleon was desperate to gain funds, so he agreed to sell the vast territory for such a low price. -
Society- Lowell Mills Built
The Lowell Mills were textile mills in Massachusetts named after Francis Lowell. These mills gave many women jobs. However, working conditions were bad, so the workers formed labor unions. Although ineffective, women learned that they were able to at least try to fight for their rights. -
Society- Publishment of The Liberator
The Liberator was a newspaper published by abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison. The paper, that showed his determination to demolish slavery as quickly as possible, sparked the abolitionist movement in the 1830. -
Expansion- Texas Annexation Act
The Texas Annexation Act was passed as an offer of annexation to the Republic of Texas. Texas was independent from Mexico at this time, but the Mexican government was still angry that it agreed to the offer. Tensions created by annexation led to the Mexican-American War. -
Society- Seneca Falls Convention
The Seneca Falls Convention was the first Women's Rights Convention in U.S. history. It was held in Seneca Falls, New York. There, the organizers presented the Declaration of Sentiments which was modeled after the Declaration of Independence. -
Expansion- Gadsden Purchase
Mexico sold a strip of land in the Southwest to America for $10 million. America wanted this land to build a transcontinental railroad. However, the North was unhappy because the railroad was being built in the South.
