  • The Boston Tea Party

    The Boston Tea Party
    340 chests of tea were thrown off of ships into the Boston Harbor by colonists dressed as Indians. They did this in response to the Tea Act.

    The results of the various Coercive, as known by the British, or the Intolerable, as known by the colonists, Acts were the harbor of Boston being shut down temporarily, the prosecuted royal officials getting a trial in Britain, Massachusetts governor being replaced by General Thomas Gage, and Massachusett's government losing its charter.

    First Continental Congress

    A meeting of fifty-five delegates from twelve of the thirteen colonies; Georgia was absent. They met in Carpenter's Hall and wanted to respond to intolerable acts. Had difficulty ruling between peace or violence; peace won out. After they started the minutemen and stopped Great Britain Trade. The Articles of Assosciation was sent.
  • Lexington and Concord

    Lexington and Concord
    700 soldiers on their way to Concord, by way of Lexington, to looking for weapons and were fought by 77 minutemen. It was the first shot of the American Revolution. Eight minutemen died but when the British were coming back from Concord they were shot at and 250 plus were harmed or dead.

    In Philadelphia representatives from twelve colonies met, needing a decision. They decided to stay with Great Britaim but to send the Olive Brach Petition to King George and to have George Washington lead a continental army.

    Battle of Bunker Hill
    The American knew this British were leaving the Boston Harbor to go to Fort Ticonderoga, so the American's set up on top of Breed's Hill, which the British would have to cross. The British won after much fighting, but only about 500 Americans died compared to 1,000 British.

    George Washington Takes Command of Continental Army
    Appointed at the second Continental Congress, George Washington was the new leader of approximately 14,000 men who promptly won Boston back from the British under his leadership.

    Written by Thomas Paine but sold originally without his name, Common Sense was a pamphlet that explained why America needed independence from Britain. It greatly helped the revolution and made many more people become a part of the Continental Army.

    Written by Thomas Jefferson and edited by the Committee of Five, the Declaration of Independence made the colonies break from Britain official. Its main points were that people had unalienable rights, that King George III had gone against their rights, and that King George III had gone against the social contract between people and their ruler.

    30,000 British in New York Harbor
    30,000 British soldiers fight 23,000 colonial militia men, led by George Washington, and the British eventually win having pushed the colonists back into New Jersey.

    General Howe's army went against George Washington's army and Howe was winning, taking New York, but luckily for the patriots he made a mistake and Washington's army was not captured. The British got New York but not many captives. 5/2 was the ratio of patriots to British dead.

    Benjamin Franklin went to France to see if they would assist in fighting against England. They were convinced and joined the colonists. They made a treaty to bind them officially.

    2,400 soldiers led by George Washington went across the Delaware River and fought and captured the Hessians. 900 plus prisoners were won for them.

    A French built fort, the Americans had control of Fort Ticonderoga during the Revolutionary war until the British came and began firing at them. They decided to secretly retreat, but someone saw so the British moved in and took the fort.

    George Washington was set up to fight the British where he thought they would go to cross the Brandywine River to get to the capitol. They tricked him and made it to the capitol, taking it under their control, but Congress was able to escape.

    Soon after the British won the Battle of Brandywine, they kept Americans at bay as they went on to take Philadelphia for the whole winter of 1777.

    The British under Burgoyne planned an attack but Howe went against him and took Philadelphia. Burgoyne had many difficulties and the Americans were able to get the British into a place where they, after defeat in battles, surrended.

    George Washington and his army spent a cold hard winter at Valley Forge while Howe and his army were in Philadelphia. His troops trained under Baron Von Steuben then and they got stronger and better over the course of the winter.

    Benjamin Franklin went to France and tried to get them to ally with America. After winning at Saratoga the French believed they had a chance, and wanted to help them and became their allies.

    John Paul Jones was a patriot naval leader who won many battles against British ships. Him capturing the ship Serapis is a famous battle. He was in his ship, Bonhomme Richard, when he was fighting against HMS Serapis and another ship. He won Serapis.

    14,000 soldiers under General Clinton capture Charleston, killing 250 and taking 5,400 captive. It was a big loss for the colonists.

    The Articles of Confederation set up the Unitied States' Gorvernment. It layed out how Congress would be the one main government group nationally, and how much power it had and what it could do.

    Elizabeth Freeman Sues For Her Freedom
    Elizabeth Freeman took a blow for her sister and got mad and left her master. People tried to get her back by law, so she and another slave with a lawyer sued Massachusetts and won their freedom.

    The British that moved to Yorktown, Virginia were trapped by the American army and French naval fleet. They were under a siege for about three weeks until they surrendered and 8,000 British became prisoners.
  • Treaty of Paris

    Treaty of Paris
    The Treaty of Paris was signed and ended the joining between the colonies and Britain, and the American Revolution. It outlined the perimeter of the country and its expansion abilities. It said a bit about where they could trade also.
