Stamp Act
Colonists had to pay a tax on all printed material they used including legal documents such as wills, and even playing cards. This money was used to cover debt generated in the war between Britain and France. The tax angered many colonists. People were outraged since they had never paid taxes directly to the British government before. -
The Tea Act
Tea was very important for American colonists and it was taxed. Drinking tea had become a deeply established cultural tradition with all social classes. The colonists considered it as a sign of British rule over them and as an attack on a cherished custom. Resentment over this tax later led to various acts of protest. -
Boston Tea Party
The Boston Tea Party was a protest to the Tea Act. A group of American colonists boarded three British ships in Boston Harbor. Colonists showed opposition by throwing 342 tea chests to the sea. They also destroyed the expensive shipment in a dramatic act of resistance, increasing tensions with Britain. -
First Continental Congress
A meeting where representatives from the colonies met to discuss their complaints against Britain. They made the decision to end trade with Britain and raise a military force, made of the civilian population. These made tensions with Britain escalate even more. -
Battles of Lexington and Concord
When British troops attempted to take a hold of colonial weapons, the colonial militia responded and met them in battles. This marked the outbreak of conflicts between the British and the colonial militia. It additionally marked the start of the American Revolution. -
Second Continental Congress
Colonist representatives met in support of the American Revolution and the Revolutionary War. George Washington was established as the commander in chief of the army. They also drafted the Declaration of Independence. -
Declaration of Independence
The document that declared the colonies independence from Britain was approved. This movement was based on the ideas of the Enlightenment. A new country, the United States of America was created. -
Battle of Saratoga
The battle of Saratoga was a key American victory during the Revolutionary war. This battle convinced France to support the American cause, giving crucial military aid. It showed that the Americans could win, marking a major turning point. The battle ended on October 7, 1777. -
Battle of Yorktown
The last major battle of the Revolutionary War. With the help of French troops and ships, the British surrendered in Yorktown, Virginia. This secured independence and effectively ended the war. The battle ended on October 19, 1781 -
Treaty of Paris
This treaty officially ended the Revolutionary War.The agreement recognized the US as an independent country and established its boundaries extending from the Atlantic Ocean to the Mississippi River. It marked a new beginning for America and established peace with Britain. -
United States Constitution
The Constitution became the foundation of the United States government. It was based on ideas of enlightenment thinkers. The constitution contained the idea of, three branches of government, natural rights and “Social Contract”. -
Bill of Rights
Ten modifications were added to the Constitution. These modifications protected basic rights like freedom of speech, press and religion advocated by Enlightenment thinkers. It ensures that the government respects the rights of all citizens, guaranteeing civil rights and liberties.
