British called the four laws they passed the Intolerable Acts because they were so harsh. Since Boston faced hunger, other countries sent goods to Boston. -
Lexington and Concord
Britain went to head to Concord and found nobody there so went to go back to Lexington. The British met over 300 minutemen and fighting broke out. -
Washington Becomes Head of Army
Delegates appointed Washington commander because they were trying to set up a Continental Army. He would soon be fighting against one of the world's toughest armies. -
Battle of Long Island
More than 1,400 Americans were killed, wounded, or captured. Washington hurried North to avoid capture (did't want Btitish to capture his army). During Autumn, Washington fought many battles with Howe's army. -
Declaration of Independence Signed
The Continental Congress voted that the 13 colonies were free and independent states. Delegates ordered the Delcaration of Independence to be printed. Jefferson signed the Declaration and wrote it. -
Battle of Saratoga
Burgoyne surrendered his army to the Americans because he was trapped by the Americans. The victory at Saratoga ended the British threat to New England. -
Battle of Yorktown
The British surrendered their weapons and marched between the troops that had won. The general had decided that the situation was hopeless because for several weeks, the American and French army had pounded the British. -
Paris Peace Treaty
The British recognized the United States as an independent nation. Americans agreed to ask the state legislatures to pay the Loyalists for property they had lost during the war.
