John Paul Jones, the commander of U.S. ship Bonhomme Richard, won a sea fought batlle against the British ships, the Serapis, and Countess of Scarborough. -
Battle of Kings Mountain
The battle was held about nine miles south of Kings Mountain, North Carolina. The Patriot militia defeated the Loyalist militia, which was commanded by Major Patrick Fergusen. Fergusen died during the battle and the surprising upset forced Cornwallis to retreat his pans to invade North Carolina. -
British Surrender at Yorktown
The Battle of Yorktown was a decisive victory for the American Army, and the French Army. It was the last major battle on North American soil of the Revolutionary War. Cornwallis was captured, along with the army, which caused the British to negotiate the conflict. -
Treaty of Paris Ratified
The treaty was ratified in the Senate Chamber of the Maryland State House. The treaty marked the end of the war and officially made the United States a free nation. -
Washington's Farewell
George Washington wrote his farewell address near the end of his second term. The letter was almost immediately published in the newspapers across the country.
