Battle of Bunker Hill
Also known as "Battle of Breed's Hill", the battle of Bunker Hill was the first formal fight of the Revolutionary War. Led by Maj. Gen. Thomas Gage, the British assaulted Breed's Hill. The Americans , led by Israel Putnam, had built earthen barriers and defended the Hill. Eventually the British won the hill but the Americans learned that they could go toe-to-toe with the British. -
Battle of Long Island
After leaving Boston, Gen. Sir William Howe pushed to conquer New York. Gen. George Washington and the colonists attempted to fight off the highly trained British soldiers. But the Americans were overrun and had to flee. The British victory was cheered but it gave time for George Washington to regroup with other colonist soldiers. -
The Battle of Trenton
During the terrible weather, Gen. Howe allowed his forces to relax. But Gen. George Washington had other plans. He snuck troops across the Delaware and told miltias from surrounding colonies to join him. They ambushed German mercenaries and took almost 1000 prisoners. This victory by the colonies boosted morale. -
The Battles of Saratoga
British Major General John Burgoyne composed a plan to end the war. The British troops split up to isolate the rebels in New England. However, due to colonist attacks there was only one British force left. American General Horatio Gates set up defensive armies in New York and pushed back the British. This was considered one of the worst losses in British history and was a turning point in the Revolutionary War. The battles lasteed from January 18, 1777 to October 17, 1777. -
The Battle of Brandywine
Armies led by George Washington and WIlliam Howe fought at the Brandywine Creek. The huge British army won the battle. However, the British could not deliver a crushing blow before the colonists retreated. -
The Battle of Monmouth
The British realized that holding Philadelphia would not help them. So they British tried to retreat to their base in New York. But, they did not have enough boats to do it all by water. Gen. Charles Lee assaulted the British at Monmouth. During the night , the British troops slipped away and the Americans claimed victory. -
Cowpens
Daniel Morgan led 1000 soldiers against the British and Lieutenant Colonel Tarleton. American victory and British casualties high. -
Guilford Court House
Americans led by General Greene led 4400 soldiers into a forest area and claimed victory over 1900 British soldiers. -
Yorktown
French and American soldiers led by Washington and de Rochambeau fought British soldiers led by Cornwallis. The French blocked off the British supplies and the Americans went to town. This led to the end of the British campaign.
