  • Battle of Lexington and Concord

    British were trying to find the militia's stores if ammunition and arms. 79 militia met 1,000 British troops at Lexington. 8 militia were killed. This was the first battle of the American Revolution.
  • Battle of Bunker Hill

    At the battle of Bunker Hill the militia numbered about 20,000 strong. The battle was known as the battle of Breeds Hill but was changed the the battle of Bunker Hill. The British won this battle because the militia ran out of ammunition.
  • Battle of Long Island

    The British won this battle. They outnumbered the Continental Army. The Patriots fought hard but they couldn't defeat the British. After the Patriots were defeated they retreated from New York which had become filled by Loyalists, the British chased the Continental Army all the way to Pennsylvania.
  • Battle of Trenton

    In this battle the Patriots sailed the Delaware river then surprised and defeated the British on the morning of December 26th 1776. This was a small but important battle of the American Revolution.
  • Battle of Saratoga

    In July, General Burgoyne captured Fort Ticonderoga, but he had no supplies, so he sent a force to the American supply base in Bennington, Vermont. But a local militia group called the Green Mountain Boys defeated them. So Burgoyne retreated to Saratoga where he was surrounded by General Horatio Gates and his army. When he made a desperate attack, the Patriots held firm, on October 17, 1777 Burgoyne surrendered.
  • Battle of Monmouth

    Each side had equal sides they each claimed to have won the war but it was called a tie. During the Battle of Monmouth, Molly Pitcher played a huge role. She brought water to the collapsing soldiers, she helped the wounded and manned the cannon after her husband died. She was given the nickname Molly Pitcher but her real name was Mary Ludwig Hayes McCauly. At the end of the war there were many losses America: 109 dead, 160 wounded, and 130 missing
    British: 207 dead, 170 wounded.
  • Battle of Cowpens

    The British were under Lieutenant Colonel Banastre Tarelton and the Patriots were under Brigadier General Daniel Morgan. Tarelton ordered his men to attack and when they did, Morgan instructed the militia to " fight with them but to leave the front line after firing two rounds". But the British was unaware so when the battle started the British were in trouble! The Patriots fought hard.. Tarelton escaped but his army was demolished.
  • Battle of Yorktown

    This was the last battle of the American Revolution. 5,000 militia troops blocked Cornwallis's is escape from Yorktown. They also blocked the British escape by sea. After 3 weeks of fighting Cornwallis surrendered. Ending the War for Independence. The Patriots worked hard and fought until the end and got the thing they wanted most, INDEPENDENCE. So the next time you want something you can't stop when things get tough, because if the militia would have given things would be very different.
