The Battles of Lexington and Concord were the first battles of the American Revolutionary War. British troops went to Concord to take colonists' weapons. At Lexington, the colonists fought the British who soon retreated. -

Fort Ticonderoga is a fort in Ticonderoga, New York. The British captured the fort from the French in the French and Indian War. The Green Mountain Boys surprised the British and captured the fort on May 10, 1775. -

The Battle of Chelsea Creek was the first naval conflict in the Revolutionary War. Colonel John Stark led militiamen to Chelsea where they got supplies and burned supplies that the British needed. A British ship got stuck in a marsh and the patriots attacked it. -

British troops led by Major General Howe went to Bunker Hill and attacked the patriots. In this battle, Prescott famously ordered the colonists to, "Hold your fire until you see the whites of their eyes". -

George Washington had the higher ground, but was defeated by the British who had more men. Washington and his men were able to escape despite British attempts of surrounding them. -
Battle of Fort Washington
The British attacked Fort Washington while Washington and his men were on the other side of the Hudson River. The 8,000 British men and Hessian mercenaries defeated the 3,000 men defending the fort, but there were many British and Hessian casualties. -

George Washington and his men crossed the Delaware River on Christmas day and surprised the British. The Battle of Trenton was a victory for George Washington. -

The British and Washington were both heading to Princeton, where they battled. Washington won the battle. -
Battle of Oriskany
The Battle of Oriskany was one of the bloodiest battles of the Revolutionary War. The British won the battle, but there were many casualties on both sides. 500 of the 800 militiamen were killed or captured. -
Battle of Bennington
American militiamen found out that British troops were heading south from Canada. Americans fought with the British in Bennington, New York and eventually surrounded the British and won the battle. -
Battle of Brandywine
The British attacked the Americans at Brandywine Creek, near Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania. Half of the British troops attacked from the front while the other half tried to circle behind Washington's men. Washington ordered his men to retreat and abandon their posts to avoid being surrounded. -
Battle of Saratoga (Freeman's Farm)
One September 19, 1777, the first Battle of Saratoga was fought. The patriots had sharpshooters from Virginia attacking the British as well as militia forces battling the British. The British lost two men for every one American man killed. -

George Washington tried to surprise the British and attacked them in Philadelphia, but the continental army lost the battle. Twice as many American lives were lost as the British. -

The British were continuing to try to get to New York. The Americans got reinforcements and outnumbered the British 2 to 1. The Americans won the battle at Bemis Heights in Saratoga, New York. -

Washington and militiamen battled the British troops at Monmouth, New Jersey. Due to poor leadership from Lee, Washington's men failed at their surprise attack on the British. -

The British surprised the Americans in Savannah, Georgia with an attack. The Americans were very outnumbered. The British gained control of Savannah. -
Siege of Charleston
Colonists knew that Charleston was a target of the British after the Capture of Savannah, but they suffered the biggest loss of the Revolutionary War at during the Siege on Charleston. With the help of loyalists, the British gained control of Charleston, South Carolina and captured many patriots. -
Battle of Camden
General Horatio Gates took his men into battle with the British, but many were in no condition to fight. The Battle of Camden was a major victory for the British. -

The Battle of King's Mountain was fought between patriots and loyalists. The patriots defeated the loyalists by attacking the hillside many times. Many more loyalists were killed than patriots. -

The Battle of Cowpens was a battle between Lieutenant Colonel Banastre Tarleton's soldiers and loyalists and General Daniel Morgan's continental soldiers. The patriots defeated the British soldiers. -

General Cornwallis' soldiers attacked General Greene's army and militia. Greene ordered his men to retreat, but the British suffered many casualties. -
The Battle of Eutaw Springs
Patriot soldiers took over a British camp. British Major John Majoribanks then sent his men to attack them. The Battle of Eutaw Springs was a patriot victory because it gave them even more control in the south. -
The Battle of Yorktown
Washington sent the American troops to block the British escape by land while the French blocked their escape by sea. The British were surrounded by the Americans and French within days. General Cornwallis surrendered at Yorktown on October 17, 1781.
