  • Battle of Lexington & Concord

    Battle of Lexington & Concord
    This was the first battle in the American Revolution. During the night of April 18th, British troops prepared to march to Concord. They thought it would be easy, but they did not know that Paul Revere and William Dawes had warned the colonists that they were coming. When the British arrived in Lexington, about 70 minutemen were waiting to fight. After the Redcoats passed Lexington, the colonists that had survived attacked them in a way they did not know.
  • Battle of Fort Ticonderoga

    Battle of Fort Ticonderoga
    Benedict Arnold got together 400 men to seize Fort Ticonderoga near Lake Champlain in New York. Benedict Arnold learned that Ethan Allen was also planning to attack, so they joined forces. Together, they took the British by surprise. They surrendered on May 10th, 1775.
  • Battle of Bunker Hill

    Battle of Bunker Hill
    On June 16 1775, militia controlled by Colonel William Prescott set up posts on Bunker Hill. The next day, the redcoats charged. The Americans open fired, which made the British retreat. Two more times the redcoats charged, and lost a lot of soldiers. Finally the Americans had to withdraw because they ran out of gunpowder. Even though the British won, they had 1,000 soldiers dead or injured. The British learned that beating the Americans would not be quick or easy.
  • Battle of Long Island

    Battle of Long Island
    The Americans were ready to fight even though they only had 20,000 soldiers. The two sides fought in the Battle of Long Island in late August, 1776. The British badly beat the outnumbered Americans. The Patriots fought as hard as they could but could not beat the huge British Army.
  • Battle of Trenton

    Battle of Trenton
    Washington was camped in Pennsylvania along the Delaware River across from the British. During Christmas night 1776, Washington led 2,400 troops to surprise and fight the British at Trenton the next day. They then escaped, and marched to Princeton, and the army scattered the British force there.
  • Battle of Saratoga

    Battle of Saratoga
    The British plan for taking Albany was not working. General Burgoyne's army hadn't gotten to Bennington yet either. He needed supplies, so he sent a force to supply base at Bennington, Vermont. The Green Mountain boys defeated them there. Burgoyne retreated to Saratoga New York, where General Horatio Gates surrounded them. They tried to attack back, but the Patriots held firm. Burgoyne surrendered on Oct. 17, 1777. The British had fallen, and the Continental Army had won a huge victory.
  • Battle of Monmouth

    Battle of Monmouth
    On June 28th, troops under General Washington and troops under General Clinton fought. It was a very hot day, and both sides stopped fighting. At the British slipped away.
  • Battle of Cowpens

    Battle of Cowpens
    When the British arrived Danial Morgan set up a defense. He ordered his men to shoot 3 times and the retreat. Danial's plan was working pretty well. The British continued to attack, but eventually got too tired and hurt. This was the turning point of the American Revolutionary War. After loosing several battles in the South, the Continental Army finally beat the Redcoats at Cowpens. This victory forced the British to retreat, and it made confidence higher for the Americans that they might win.
  • Battle of Yorktown

    Battle of Yorktown
    General Cornwallis realized the British had to act quickly to win the war. Cornwallis marched North to Virginia, and carrying raids throughout the region. Washington sent Lafayette and Wayne to stop Cornwallis. The British were now trapped on a peninsula. The American troops marched South, but General Clinton didn't know until it was too late. The Redcoats were trapped and the American and French began to cut off British supplies and routs. The Patriots had a victory of Yorktown.
