Battle of Lexington and Concord
On April 19, 1775, the British were marching toward Lexington, heading for Concord. When they got there, 70 minutemen were waiting for them. When someone fired a shot (We don't know who.), a fight started, and 8 minutemen lay dead. Then, when they continued on, colonists hid behind trees and shot them, leaving 174 wounded and 73 dead redcoats. -
Battle of Fort Ticonderoga
Benedict Arnold raised a force of 400 militia to seize Fort Ticonderoga. He teamed up with Allen Ethan. They took the British by surprise and they seized the fort. -
Battle of Bunker Hill
The redcoats assembled at Breed's hill where the colonists were waiting. Prescott told the colonists not to fire until they saw the whites of the British's eyes. The British charged 3 times until the colonists ran out of ammunition, retreating, letting the British win the battle. -
Battle of Long Island
This battle was an attempt by the British army to seize New York so they could isolate New England from the colonies. Sadly, the Continental Army had to retreat in that battle. -
Battle of Trenton
The Hessian troops were surprised by Washington's attack on them. They eventually surrendered with 22 killed, 92 wounded, 918 captured, and 400 escaped. Luckily, the Americans had only 2 frozen to death and 5 wounded. -
Battle of Saratoga
On September 19th, John Burgoyne achieved a victory over the Americans. But when he attacked for a second time, he was defeated and he retreated. Ten days afterwards, he surrendered. -
Battle of Monmouth
Washington decided to march his troops towards the retreating British. The British struck first, leading to a fight that resulted in getting many men killed or wounded. -
Battle at Cowpens
Daniel Morgan took 300 Colonial riflemen and 700 militiamen to attack the British backcountry fort, Ninety-Six. By the end of the battle, British resulted in 800 wounded, killed, or captured while the Americans had less than 100 casualties. -
Battle of Yorktown
A force of 17,000 American and French troops, led by George Washington, fought against 9,000 British troops in this battle. After 3 weeks, Cornwallis surrendered to Washington, ending the war of independence. On September 3rd, 1783, the Treaty of Paris was signed, declaring America a free country.
